Return to New Orleans
Got this email from some aquaintances who live (or lived) in New Orleans. They had sold their business in the French Quarter earlier this year but still have their home there. Their return to NO was pre-Rita. Here's an excerpt from their email....
....We have been on the move, literally, for over three weeks. There are many stories to share, but thought you'd appreciate a motorcycle story with a happy ending.
Tom and I had driven from New Orleans to Houston to Galveston to Houston to Colorado. We get a call from our neighbor, who "got back in", telling us that among other things, our garage door 'blew' open and an officer for the ATF (alcohol, tobacco and firearms) "commandeered" my BMW 650 motorcycle.
Now if it was used for good purpose is one thing....
Anyway, about a week later, we get another call from same neighbor saying that our house was 'firebombed' . We quickly packed, rented a van, and drove straight through to New Orleans. A friend faxed us an entry pass, so we got in for a few hours to survey the damage and grab some 'stuff'. Now, get this. We could have driven any number of roads through the French Quarter on the way to our home. We drive down Chartres street and lo and behold, there parked in front of a bar, IS MY MOTORCYCLE!!!!!!! The battery was dead and gas tank was empty, but Tom jumped on it and held onto the van while we "commandeered" it right back and drove that baby home!!!
Too cool.
The house is lacking a roof over the living, dining and guest bed rooms. The firebomb turned out to be a freon cannister that exploded from a burning warehouse behind our house...they were all over the neighborhood and broke through our shutter, through the window, through the sheer curtain, burning the hard wood floor. Again, sooooo lucky it didn't burn down the house!!!!!
We are back in Colorado, staying at friend's ranch for the time being. We still entertain the idea of a bike ride north....we plan to return to New Orleans mid-October to coordinate roofers and contractors for repair...to sell or rent or what? Each day brings a change of heart, so change of plan.
