Did my own valves on the KLR
Pretty proud of myself. A friend and I did the valves on our KLRs on Wednesday afternoon, first time on our own. We figured we'd take one apart and do it and if we had problems, at least we had the other one on hand to refer back to. I asked Sagot to come by the garage after work in case we ran into problems but aside some a few minor questions, but we did it all on our own (I think he was actually a little put out that we didn't need his expertise after all).
We found this super easy to follow "how-to" guide at http://www.klr650.marknet.us/valves.html. It had pictures and step by step instruction to disassemble everything- I don't think I could've figured it out from the Clymer manual alone. The first one took a long time (4.5 hrs) because we were taking everything apart really slowly and reading carefully, doublechecking the shim calcs, etc, but the second one probably took only 2.5 hrs start to finish.
We are so smart, SMRT.....

Did you already have spare shims or did you go to a shop to swap?

Yah, my buddy had 2 complete shim sets, which made things easier. I think they are around $90-100 a set. Turns out that 2 of my old shims were the size he needed when we got to his, so they went into his bike. At the end of the day, there were 5 shims that needed to be swapped to return both shim sets to their original assortment of sizes. Burnaby Kawi swaps them for $3.75 a piece. If I were to do it again (without knowing what size shims I have in), I would do the job one day when the bike store was open and take out the old ones, calculate what size I needed, bring them in and swap them for new ones and install them and button everything back up. That way you only pay for the shims you need. And you can take a break in the middle of the process.... as long as you have a secure place to leave your bike while the top of the engine is off....
