XB12X?

...the Ulysses...what do you think?...is Buell up to something good?...I think everything's good except for that underbelly muffler, although PsychoWorld think its up to the task especially for a street-oriented off-road capable bike...made mostly in the good 'ole U S of A, too!...I'm anxious to test-ride one...

The reported really minimal steering lock, less than most clip-on'd-full-fairing'd sport bikes, inadequate to control slides they say, seems a potential serious flaw.

i love it, or at least the concept. the only things i'd still want would be a bit more wind protection for highway stretches, and of course a good inline 4. i just couldnt trust having a harley vtwin in teh middle of nowhere running on rough roads. but i jsut LOVE the concept: a sport-touring bike with just a few mods to make it logging road friendly.

Well, as you know, this chick prefers not to use the term "gay" in the derogatory, but I can't say that I would want to be seen on any logging roads with this bike

I mean, look where the exhaust is!! It will get the crap beat out of it first ride out on a logging road without some sort of bash plate.
I also don't understand the Multistrata and the V-Strom. But I bet someone will try to explain it to me....

How about when mud off the back tire plugs the exhaust- maybe I'm talking about worse road conditions than the bike is intended for, but my point is that even if they beef up the suspension, they haven't really changed the design from any of their streetbikes and the design is not good for any road surface that will throw anything off the tires.

Don't get me wrong, I really like Buells, I think that are super sexy, I just think they are reaching too far with this bike. This bike will get the crap kicked out of it on anything worse than bumpy pavement.

spam, i suspect u hit th enail on the head with your comment about it being intended for light off-road duty only, like gravel roads and good condition logging roads. i'd consider it the more adventurous edge of the sport-touring category, which is EXACTLY where i'd like to spend my time.

Glad to see someone reads the advertizing print. Buell states it is for Adventure SPORT riding, not Dual sport riding.

to the others:

Offroad duty? where does Buell say that, I think they state where the pavement ends, not where the road ends.

Only an friggin idiot would even think it is designed to go out jumping logs and doing double jumps, geesh!

I have never read where anyone here thinks the BMW should be out jumping logs and doing double and triples.

What is the big hardon people have about Buell building this bike? (or any Buell)

Does it threaten some peoples false feeling of brand superiority? There is no such thing.

IF this bike sells well, maybe it will get some of the other brands interested in this market and build simliar bikes.

The way it is now, you can buy a cruiser, a sportbike, or a dirt bike, but not much to pick from for a bike that can link together 2 paved roads with 50 miles of gravel inbetween that is more sport tour . I know for a fact that my 12R doesnt like the gravel roads, although it makes a great sport tour bike.

I just dont get this brand thing. If it has 2 wheels and a motor, its cool in my book.

let the flaming begin!

FACT: Logging roads are made of gravel, which is small rocks. Small rocks will be kicked up off the front tire when travelling at any appreciable speed while on a logging road. I haven't replaced the plastic bash guard on my KLR with a metal one yet and while travelling on a logging road, a rock hit my bash guard so hard that it took a chunk out of it. Good thing I had at least something there. There is no bash guard on this Buell. This spells trouble to me, on any bike intended for off-pavement riding. At the very least, your shiny black can is going to become pocked with rock chips. But at least the exhaust will help protect the engine- I know someone who had a sexy and expensive KTM LC4 dirt bike sold stock without a bash guard suffer engine damage when a rock kicked up off his front tire and hit his engine, right where the two halves meet causing a permanent oil leak. Now that is just WRONG.

FACT: I didn't see anyone here suggest jumping it over logs or doing double jumps.

FACT: I haven't read the advertising print on this bike, only this thread in the Dual Sport zone and had to comment on what I saw, from a Dual Sport perspective. Forgive me for having an opinion. And no, I don't think there should be an Adventure Sport forum, theres hardly enough traffic on this Dual Sport forum, which is why I backed off in my second post- you know..... the one in which I also comment on how much I really like Buells. I just don't think that they should have stuck to the same exhaust design for this application. I'll certainly mention this to my buddy, Malcolm, the pres of Deeley HD Canada, next time I see him. I also told him that the Blast didn't do a thing for me when it came out.

In closing, I'm sorry if my comments made you feel so defensive. I never intended to threaten your manhood or anything.... seesh!!

I am really impressed with who you know!! wohoo, wowwie, oh golly. A name dropper always impresses me.

As for the jumping logs, read other forums besides this site and you will come acrooss the log jumping concern along with not enough suspension for jumping.
And furthermore, if you havent even read the press releases or first road test there is no way you can make an informed statement.

geesh it seems to me you feel as if your little playground is being threatened from your reaction.

Maybe there is no traffic here because there are not many dual sport riders here. Be a bit more open minded and acccept new and different things instead of being such a narrow minded person.

as I mentioned, I was just giving my opinion on what I saw in a thread.

BTW, this is not my playground. This is where I poke my head into when I am not in my great big playground.

And if you are still offended and pissed off by my comments, then, well, I'm sorry you feel that way.

seeing as you dont have any who I am and I certainly have no idea about you, we can only assume we hate each other! ROFLOL.
Actually I dont usually say much, ask fish or PK. I didnt mean to start anything, but it seems that is where it went. Oh well, the internet is such a wonderful object to be misread , and easy enough to get ones hackles up over.

The bar lock also seems conservative, making tight turns difficult - though it's considerably better than that sported by the KTM 950.

That's a real puzzler then.

It seems plain that having less lock than most clip-on'd full-fairing'd sport bikes is NOT the ticket for any sort of dirt riding, but on the other hand it's hard to believe that KTM would have produced something just not acceptable in that department.

So perhaps one report or the other is wrong???

I ride and own an 02 12R, an 03 ZZR12 and an 04 10R when I'm not on my Buell Ulysses. And honestly as much as my more sportbike blood would care to admit, if I could only own one bike it would probably be the Buell... Wow, it's hard to believe I just said that!

Bottom line is that it can take me anywhere I want to go (far more places than all of the above because it's fun on dirt fire roads), does it more comfortably than any of the above (including the ZZR), and quite honestly will get me up or down Deal's Gap faster than any of them except the 10R! Sure I'd like more steering lock so that I could be a little more agressive sliding down dirt roads, and if you wanted to go long haul I might even opt for an aftermarket, slightly larger windscreen, but other than a couple of those minor mods, it's the kind of bike that you just pull out and ride... It even looks better the dirtier it gets so you're not going to lose much riding time keeping it clean.

As wierd as it may seem to some, it's fun on one wheel or two, it's great in the twisties, and while it'll never run in the dirt with me aboard, it'll go everywhere else I'm hoping to travel. Actually, a ride from Alaska back down to Montana is on the agenda for mine, and I can't imagine a better bike for the job.

Just my thoughts...
