custom helmets
why the hell is there not a company out there that makes custom-fitted helmets (or why don't i know about them)? the whoel helmet situation reminds me exactly of ski boots. everyone has a different shape of foot, and every manufacturer uses 1 or more different foot molds to desing their boots, so u gotta try on different models and brands till u fit something that fits. but at least with ski boots fitting, as in customizing the boot to you, is standard practice (at least among competent ski shops). when is the last time u went to a dealer to buy a helmet, and they spent an hour modifying the styrofoam and padding to match your head exactly? never, that's when. alot of ski boots now use injected liners, where the liner is actaulyl created to fit your foot EXACTLY. why not use that same idea for helmets? u buy a shell only, then the dealer injects the foam while the shell is on your head. i KNOW it could work, tho it would require a truly competent fitter to do it safely and reliably. and i'd bet my life savings that people would pay extra for custom fiiting. just consider how many of us have thrown money away on one or more helmets cause after u bought them they gave u a headache after 30 mins of riding? i would gladly pay $1000 for a helmet if i knew it would fit me perfectly, even for a helmet that woudl otherwise only run $300. frankly helmets are overpriced as it is, but i dont have to tell anyone that.

Walmart now sells DOT-Snell helmets for like $60+. Heck they even sell motorcycle oil filters. Maybe you should petition Walmart to do custom helmets.

not a chance. i have yet to meet a single walmart employee (excepting the odd cashier) who was anything more than competent. i would NEVER trust my head to a place like that.

you might reconsider if you read the recent article in motorcyclist (or was it cycleworld) about helmets...
seems as though the walmart variety faired just as well, if not better than the super expensive brands..

yeah I read that article too...the cheaper helmets like the ones Walmart sold were every bit as good, if not better, than these new expensive fancy ones.

no no, u'r taking me wrong. i got no problem buying a helmet from walmart, just wouldnt have a helmet custom fitted at a walmart. if it's a brand name product that you're familiar with, and you know what you want, then who cares where u buy it?
