OEM vs aftermarket Chain and Sprockets
I need to replace chain and sprockets on KLR650 in a big way (yes, I know that KLR 650 is not a sportbike, but I have had the same question when replacing C & S on my sportbike too and there is a bigger audience here than in dualsport zone).
The guy at the parts desk at my favourite Kawasaki dealership in Burnaby estimates that JT sprockets are about 85% as good as OEM and they are much cheaper- roughly half the cost for front and a third the cost for rear (JT front =30$ rear=$50, OEM front=$55, rear=$145).
I have 22,000 km on the original stock C & S and 16,000km of that was put on during our 3 month South America tour where we rode on salt flats and in very dusty conditions and maybe pushed the bikes further in speeds and circumstances than we normally would have done here at home. All in all, I think the stock C & S performed really, really well and I am inclined to get another set, but if the aftermarket perform at least half as well as OEM, then I actually save $$ by putting on aftermarket (doing the work at home, so shop costs are not a factor).
Anybody care to give me their opinion before I go ahead and put the aftermarket stuff on?
Also, if anyone has any comments on the perceived and real differences between DID x-ring ($150) and EX x-ring ($90), I have been told that the EX will perform as well as the DID with proper maintenance?!?

Are you kidding me? No one has an opinion on this? Has it been covered recently or something?

i prefer oem. the additional weight is so minimal, and they last longer. and with everyone upgrading to aftermarket, u can get a stock oem set with barely any use for dirt cheap.
