Artichoke Help?

PK and I bought an artichoke. They were on sale. We've never bought one before and we're wondering what to do with the thing.. he the fack do you eat it? It's pretty big.. Grapefruit size? When we go out and have them, they seem to be in dips and things like that.. in native for they're pretty gosh-darn pre-historic lookin...

Recommendations?

I know what to do with'em, but it's kinda hard to explain here.

This should have some good ideas for you, artichokes are great!

First you boil it, pull off one of the leaves, dip it in some sauce, and scrape the soft spot onto your teeth. Your suppose to finish off the soft spot on all the leaves, but you dont eat the leaves. Once you go through all the leaves, you eat the artichoke heart, which is what you see in stores.

Good luck, and may the force be with you.

All of what you say is true Beans. But don't forget about when you seperate the heart section from the leaf stalk, the best part awaits consumption. All around the stalk area, where you seperated the leafs when pulling them off, now has dozens of the "soft spots". Dip and eat. Man, my mouth is watering bad right now! I want one!

Here the Italian version of cooking stuffed artichoke!!!

First cut off the stem a little, then cut off the sharp edges on top of the leaves...Turn the artichoke upside down bang on it ( like patting someone on the back ) to make the leaves seperate from each other...Use a dutch pot, wide base but not too high putting an inch of water on the bottom to steam the artichokes...Then you put the artichokes in the pot, then stuff the spaces between the leaves with a bread crumb mix, ( put any spices you want in the breadcrumb mix ) then pour olive oil over the top of the artichoke with the bread crumbs aready inside of the artichoke...Steam them for about 20 minutes, adding water as you go along, and maybe steaming a little longer testing for softness of the artichoke, then bake them in the oven till browned on top...

To eat it you pull a leaf off and bite down on the leaf scraping off the bread crumbs with your teeth, you can eat the white stuff on the leaf...
