First ride of the season

Insured bikes and went out for first ride of the season yesterday, went around the corner 2 blocks from house and there is police doing road checks. Pull my boyfriend over as he has removed the stock fender from his R1, installed integrated tail lights and has licence mounted futher under bike with light shining on it. They advised us they are cracking down on all bikes that are set up this way, they must have the licence mounted as per stock at the back of the bike, $200 fine. States reason for this is it must be viewable for red light cameras etc and if under bike cannot be viewed from angle.

Hope this is not an omen of how the season is going to go. Not sure if we are going to fight this or not as it is well lit up and visible from back as well as up to 45° angle. Anyone else run across this or have advice.

Red light cameras take fotos of the front of a vehicle, not the back. Fight it. Plate needs to be visible to a police officer from the rear of the bike.. that's all... Check out rules/ regs online gov.bc.ca

agree plate does not have to be in the stock location. as i remember it, teh act says the plate has to he visible from behind and not obstructed/obscured, that's all. oh, and you need the plate light, which u have. u'r otu of luck on integrated turn signals, but dont know abotu the front fender.

may not be out of luck on integrated signals either as I recal motorcycles in BC are still exempt from having anything other than running lights, provided you hand signal instead...

if that's teh case, then no-one seems to know about it. i did a fairly extensive inquiry into turn signal requirements a year or so ago and the consensus seemed to be you are requried to have amber turn signals a 6" (or maybe it was 8) from the centerline of the bike. if i remember correctly the rule with hand wignalling is that u dont have to USE your turn signals if u hand signal, but u still have to have them. still worth checking tho.

After the officer handed over the ticket without mentioning no turn signals (he had only focussed on position of license plate as may not be able to photograph with photo radar), he turned on the lights and showed the officer the integrated singal and asked if it was ok. the officer was surprised and said he had never seen ones like that and that they were fine. He had taken the lens off the light and put a black divider down the middle then glued the lens back on so it is very distinctive when the signal is on, it is a bright yellow on one side and red on the other, not the orange like other ones where the colors blend together. So this does not seem to be a problem it is strictly having the license plate under the bike rather than at the back of the bike.

I was pulled over once for hand signaling, officers first question "why are you hand signaling" me cus I felt like it. officer "don't your turn signals work" ? I said yes and showed him. officers next question. "Why is you bike painted? is it stolen? me in astonishment...No I just had the bike built for me here's my registration. basically he did everything accept ask for reciepts. He said they were randomly checking for class 6 and anything suspicious. Kinda wierd but at least they're checking.
