Yamaha recalls 190,000 motorcycles because seat may fall off

March 4, 2005 - 16:14

DETROIT (AP) - Yamaha Motor Corp. is recalling around 190,000 motorcycles because the passenger seat can fall off the rear fender, U.S. safety regulators and the company said Friday.

The recall affects XV250, XVS11 and XVS65 motorcycles from the 1988-2005 model years, Yamaha spokesman Brad Banister said. The mounting hardware that connects the seat to the fender can loosen when passengers shift their weight, which eventually can cause the seat to fall off, according to a recall notice sent to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Banister said the company knows of two minor injuries caused by the defect. Banister said Yamaha decided to recall the vehicles after reviewing quality control reports on the motorcycles in Japan.

"We constantly monitor this sort of thing because we do care about the safety of our customers," Banister said.

Yamaha will notify owners about the recall this spring. Dealers will replace the seat's mounting hardware for free.

That tidbit of info is intersting to me fish.
The dealership I don't work at anymore sold over 2000 of those V-twins in the last two years.
I am glad it wont be me trying to cover all the recalls while trying to get the "normal" work done.
It's always panicsville there normally anyhow and the recall will only make itr worse.
The service manager there just asked me to come back "at least part time", and this helps me make my decision. }8^D

The system of that one bolt in the rear holding the seat down works fine as long as the customers don't add saddlebags that have the solid leather piece between them that gets sandwiched under the seat.
That piece forces the installer to flex the seat down in back to get the bolt in.
Depending on the style of bag and thickness of leather, you may be required to install a 1/4" spacer under the rear seat tab and use a longer bolt.
Some people might not do this and I can see how a seat could come off pretty easily.

Posting a safety recall such as this is obviously a good thing fish. Not certain it belongs in the Sportbike Zone...

Your manner of sensationalizing / setting the headline tone is a little harsh... certainly you'd never flame your beloved KMC like this?
