Woo Hoo! Help me pick a ride!
Okay, kids. Here's my situation. Looking for a dual sport bike to do 80% road, 20% dirt. Mostly backroads, tight, curvy, pot-hole infested. Perhaps 10 mile optional gravel stretch. Only 5 or so miles on freeway for the commute to work. 30 miles one way.
I don't want something really big (like the BMW GS or KTM Adventure) as I will prolly want to take it on single track.
Ability to carry a passenger a must, comfortably a plus.
Don't want anything really powerful (like a Duke) that will challenge my already weakened self-control on the street.
I'm thinking DRZ 400 S. I'm also thinking used for less than $3k.
Anyone wish to offer other opinions?
KLR 250 is right OUT. That's too small. Last time I rode my Dad's I was overheating the thing.

i'v been jonesing for a Yamaha WR450 but i don't even know if that will carry a passenger at all, and it's deitnitely more dirt oriented. frankly i dont think any of the dual sports except maybe the BMW are gonna be particularly comfy for a passenger tho. jsut too small with narrow seats.

From Motorcycledaily.com:
Aprilia 450 V-Twin Should Enter Production Next Year
By Dirck Edge
Aprilia has already been racing its 450cc v-twin supermoto. Expect this bike, along with a street legal version, to enter production for the 2006 model year.
This is a bike with close to 70 horsepower (on par with a Suzuki SV650) that weighs less than 300 pounds. It should be great fun to ride.

A BMW F650GS Dakar fits your bill pretty good. Definitely an 80/20 bike with comfy accomodations for two. I love mine, tho, I'd also love to trade it for a KTM 950 Adventure. The wife and I comfortably did the Ozark Fall Color Tour put on by dualsportmagazine.com last fall. I actually doubt the big KTM would be as comfy as the little GS. Less than $3K used might be tough to find, though.

Try a KLR 650 , reasonably cheap and plentiful , and pretty comfy overall .
