I hate theives, I just recently had a friend over my house and her brand new, not even 1 month old ZX10 was stolen. Right in front of my house. Luckily her insurance was swift to respond and she is getting a 2005 Metallic Raw Titanium ZX10 tomorrow. I live in a nice suburban area and these bastards came right up to my house and snatched her bike. They left her boyfriends brand new 2004 R1 that has a ton of mods and took her bone stock ZX10. Makes you think they must have had an order for an Orange ZX10. God help the fool who tries to steal my ZX12R from the garage behind my house. They won't be on film, they will be on the front page of the daily newspaper.

I've always felt that if there was more repercussions of the type these dirt bags reltate to, they would be less inclinded to comit these crimes.
I know vigilantyism [is that even a word?] is frowned upon but think about it. Would you steal a bike if the dozen or so previous theifs were capped? If the paper started runing stories of "Motorcycle thief guned down by owner while caught in the act." wouldn't that cool your heels a little bit? I've always thought booby traps would be cool. Give these bastards some of their own medicine back.
Just don't lend your ride to a buddy with out telling him.

The reason it is frowned on - or should i say illegal is because you make hurt the person(s) .... but more importantly, it would put the lawyers, judges and police out of a job lol.
The only people it would help is the medical profession, but only if they had medical insurance, but then they wouldn't because they were injuryed during the commision of a crime.

BBM: unfortunately active trapping (booby trapping) is far more heinous in the eyes of the law than theft under $1000 or even over $1000. The fast that someone is hurt by the trap is seriously frowned upon. I do agree with you....it would be very satisfying to catch them and have them "fall down the stairs" a few times. Unfortunately, if there is more than one, you take chances once again by restraining them (handcuffs, etc) and they can't witness each other's "falling down the stairs". As soon as you restrain someone, you are responsible for their wellfare. If they trip and fall and die....you are held responsible.

No matter how you look at it, it is bad situation. The solution, of course is to simply not have it happen, but that is the easy answer and is totally impractical. I guess part of the answer lies in better locks and chains to secure these bikes.....it's shitty that things have to be like this, but they are that way so we all need to deal with that.

You also might be surprised at the "unofficial" reaction of the police to vigilantism. I was assaulted by a bouncer at Slack Alices years ago, and when I went to press charges, the cop said there was nothing I could do because he had "witnesses" (Bullshit!!!). He grabbed a slip of paper and wrote something on it and slid it over to me without a word. He walked away before I could even ask what it was. I looked and on the paper was the name of the guy who assaulted me. At first I thought it was so that I had a name for a civil suit, but the cop would most likely have said something, or even provided me with a file number, so I came to the conclusion that he was assisting me in the private resolution of this matter.
