Richard Sainct 1970-2004

One of the greatest rally racers of all time, Richard Sainct, has died as a result of an accident during the Rallye des Pharaons in Egypt. Out of respect for their fallen teammate, Team KTM has withdrawn from the event.

"His tragic accident is a terrible shock for us," commented Jean-Dominique Comolli and Pablo Isla, co-présidents of the Altadis Group. "Richard Sainct was not only one of the best riders of his generation, he was also, behind his quiet demeanor, a man of great qualities and a fine tactician."

In his storied career, Sainct had won the infamous Dakar Rally three times and was always in contention for the win including his runner-up finish in 2004 behind long-time rival Nani Roma.

Sainct leaves behind a wife and two children.

Sad news. Watched him on the Dakar for as long as I've seen it. All those competitors are tough bastids!! Makes racing a GP bike look like child's play.

Terrible news. He was always a front runner and interesting to listen to in the interviews.

Guess cruising across trackless rock and sand at 160/km h catches up to a person after a while.
