Ya, know, I think it's harder picking up the correct DS bike than it is street bike. It's been trial and error for me. At first it was, I remember when I was a lot younger and used to leap tall buildings etc. That's when I bought a hopped up YZ125 in the 80s from a friend. Shit!!!! I was on the ground more often than not. Hardest bike to ride I've ever tried.

KLR650 got kinda boring. Too big and the suspension was mush. Why did I own 2 of them then?? And I think I'd still buy another one, instead of something like an overwieght BMW GS or even a KTM. More an "adventure" bike than something I want to spend MOST of the time on the dirt with.

KLR250? I thought it was a really underrated bike for single track at sane speeds. No way it can compete with a dirt bike that's been street legalized but, on the road it goes not bad. The engine is bullet proof and the 6 speed trans helps a lot. Spaghetti suspension lets it down though.

The Enduro model DR350 with a plate on it was a bike I wish I'd never sold. Best of both worlds and perfect for the kinda riding I like to do.

If you're from the USA, forget this model. Yamaha DT200 from I think, 1989. That year they upgraded the motor with the YPVS I think it was called. Same idea as the RZ350's power valve. The DT was basically a WR motor made street legal. Same size front forks, aluminum swing arm etc but street legal. Weighed around 240 pounds with all the street gear on it and I think fully gassed. Needed to be regeared for dirt but with stock gearing it easliy humiliate a 650 4 stroke on the street. But, small fuel tank and not being sold in the US made aftermarket stuff non existent. I thnk the last year of production was 1995. If you can find one in good shape, get it. It was the real Motard bike!

If you can easily get the bike street legalized in your area, there's a ton of bikes you can choose from. WR450 is an Animal, but has fantastic suspension for off road. From what I've seen from the friend who owns one, they're dead reliable also. He's been SanDiego to Cabo and back twice, 90% off road and nothing more than normal maintenance needed.

...I'm keeping my KLR650, but if this were the classifieds , I'd say that I have a very clean, very low-mileage, ridden by Ms. Daisy 2003 KLX400SR (w/new battery), WB skid plate, case savers, and Dunlop 606 DOT knobbies on it for sale in Temecula, Ca.

My Dad has the KLR 250 and yeah, the suspension is total mush and the thing is just too heavy for that size on single track.

Gimme my KTM 250 any day.

Guess it depends on the money you do or dont have and how serious you are. Missus Dirty for example, h as taken a fancy to those big tired TW200s. I think they may be a laugh!
