Changing rear tyre profile from 55 to 50
Hi all.
I have a ZX14 fitted with Michillen Pilot Road II's in great condition. My fiancé', new to large bikes has just gotten her "big bike" license. She is now riding a 2007 ZX10R. A big difference from her GPX250, but she is a VERY sedate rider. Her tyres are pretty knackered in the centre, and I'm upgrading my bike to a more sports tyre and considering fitting my tires to her bike. My question is.... does anyone know exactly what effect changing from a 190/55/17 rear to a 190/50/17 would have? The front tire is the same profile (120/70/17), so won't be a problem.
Thanks for any help.

It shouldn't make a huge difference in the way the bike handles it may slow the bikes steering a bit but probably not enough to notice..

Well changed the tyres today.
Given that the old tyres were very tragic, the swap has made an instant improvement.
I'll have to shadow her bike next ride and see if it makes a change to the speedo.
Thanks for the input.

The 50 series will not be as tall as the 55 so her bike won't steer as quick. The rear of the bike will sit a little lower. You can add some spring preload on the shock or add a couple of washers on top of the shock mount to regain what you lost. If you want to run a 50 series I recommend you go with a 200/50/17 as it is slightly taller than the 190/55/17 you won't have this problem. If you want to figure out the difference in hight of the tire... you multiply .50X190...or .55X190....this will give you the difference in MM.

Personally I've always changed to 190/50/17 and love the feel and haven't made any adjustments otherwise. Feels better to me. I do lots of long rides, quick lane changes feel smith as butter. I'd do it again on my next tire change.

55's will turn in much faster than the 50's. Anyone who disputes this either hasn't ridden on one, or if they have they're the straight line type of rider that might enjoy learning to drag a puck here:
