zx10 little weekend project

Its the end of spring break for the daughter so I did not want to get into anything too involved.
I took on a smaller project, and left the 14 alone this weekend

A friends 08' ZX10R.
He dropped the bike off with a new tire, and I will get to tune the Bazzaz today!
Should be fun!

Install:

Puig windscreen
Brocks alien head
Bazzaz ZFI
Bazzaz ZFM
Servo eliminator
Removed flies
Disabled Air injection
Speedohealer with remote recal
Frame sliders (had to cut left side)
Pazzo levers
Fender eliminator
Integrated tail light
Speed Cell Lithium battery

Removed squid stickers
Cleaned chain wax off the wheeel, don't know why anyone uses that goop anymore...
Touched up some paint, as it had been droped on its side
Straightened out peg feeler that was bent

Sounds wicked, can't wait to hear it at 13,000 rpm under load....

Bike is approx 22 lbs lighter now with the battery and pipe change!

Someone must have won an instant scratch & win lottery ticket. That's a good deal of stuff being changed / modded.

It's good to see that you have the work coming in.

Gotta let us know what numbers it runs (on same dyno as your bike was run). I'm betting it makes some good numbers.

No dyno...
Real world afr tuning ....
I will tell you, it is FAST! Faster than a stock zx14 for sure, and real close with similar mods.
It will not launch like a 14, and 6th gear is alot lower than the 14, but between the gears and roll ons, 6000 rpm on the 10 would = the 14 at 4000 rpm.
A jockey 40 lbs lighter on the 10 compared to the 14 would run away until 6 th gear I think.
A bit scary in crosswinds at high speeds though, the frt end is real light, and i really had to lean into the wind today.
I found my hips were sore after 2 hrs, and my hand went numb as well... the 14 is an all day bike, whereas 3-4 hrs on this and I would be done.
Definately handles awesome, lean your head and the bike follows, but stability lacking compared to the 14 too

Forgot to mention, that 6th gear is lazy rolling to top speed... it revs higher for given speed , yet my 14 with same mods would runa away from it in 6th gear roll on at any speed to top end.
Its a nice little bike, I really like the weight, handling, and turn in on corners... oh and the brakes are wicked too!

After spanking every literbike who dared with the 14, I would say this would be close except the launch... I would be willing to give up thezx14 power for the better handling ZX10 if I lived near canyons, the corner speed is in a whole different realm on the 10...

Dubious, thanks for the post. I am in a roll on war with a friend who just pick up a stock wheelbase, -1+1 gear, s/o piped, no PC, 04 zx10 three days ago ( in great shape with only 7000 miles on it). I took him seriously from the very beginning because he is a hell of a rider and 100lb lighter than I. But I was sure I would take him with my brocked out, 89 pump gas, 64" w/b, 14 no problem. Man was I wrong! I did beat him, but it was a hell of a fight every time. We started in 3rd due to his wheelbase, and he was within a bike to a bike and a half of me until 6th. (as you described). I was shocked. I am thinking of going up 1 tooth on the rear to 16/45 to try and get some of this heat off my ass. On top of that, another close friend just picked up a new 08 zx10. I think I better get on the tread mill .
I usually run my bike at the local 1/8 mile track, I haven't put much thought in to the best roll on gearing until now. Any advice would be greatly appreciated?

BLK ICE you just gotta face the facts, with him running -1 +1 and most importantly minus 100 pounds, FROM A ROLL, it will always be a toss up who wins that one. You're heavy, the 14 is heavy, and weight matters! If you had a 69 Impala with a 500hp BB and a 350hp 302 mustang gave you a run for your money would you be upset??? NO, you would be smiling because you just gave HIM a run for his money in your lead sled.

BLK ICE:
I really think any gearing lower than 16/41 on the 14 makes it buzzy, and doesn't allow the massive torque of the 14 to pull a gear hard. Shifting too much.
The zx14 is not a revver like the 10, much like my diesel truck, gears that are too low, and create too many shifts actually slow it down... mind you sound like a big guy and the 14 is pulling hard already?
I weigh 215 with gear and after trying 16/44 gears went to 17/44 (same as 16/41 almost)
I found I was shifting too much, and 1 st gear became almost useless on the14 with 16/44... as soon as the clutch was out I was shifting...

The treadmill will be the cheapest answer, after that increases in displacement and compression will help you out. Nitrous is cheaper though....

The first impression riding the stock 08 zx10 was it was slow.
Uncorked, much like the 14, it really woke up.
I am still very impressed, more so than I have ever been with a literbike for power.

After sleeping on it and reading your advice, I am not going to make any changes to my bike for this roll on affair. After all, I have won every race even thou it was by slim margins. I have learnt from pass experience that making changes to a set-up that proves to be fast usually slows it down. The race is so close that if he goes up on the rear gear any, he will have to shift to soon / frequently and if he goes down I will simply continue to out torque him(I think). I haven't heard from him in 2 days so I know he is trying to figure it out also. I will wait until he makes a move than I will counter punch if I need to. For now, I am going to use my expensive motorcycle jacket hanger for what I originally brought it for and drop a few pounds.

Thanks for the tip, I will look in to that as it is time for an oil change anyway. By the way, what brand and is it good for 3000 miles or just short runs?

I use Mobil 1 0w-20 synthetic car oil. Works just fine, but the engine/ valve train noises are a bit louder. I'm at 3500 miles now and need to change it. As oil breaks down from use, it thins it out to a lighter viscosity. Brocks says its ok to run 0w or less than 0w oil on the track and street, but I'll stick with my dyno proven 0w-20 Mobil 1.

Sticks, I was reading Brock's Zx-14 diary, Part 2...and it says:

Alisyn Pro Drive 21 Oil <<0W.
(<<0W means less than zero weight for race track use ONLY!)

Did you hear something differently from Brock? I'm also interested in why you suspect that you gained 7 hp from the oil? If you did, that is great. I am always looking for a little increase here and there, but 7 hp would be huge, imo.

Thanks for any more info you might have..

Shane

servo eliminator allows removal of the exhaust flapper valve in the mid pie, and all of the junk associated with it.

I would be worried about using 0-w 20 for exteneded mileage, but thats just me....

Shane

Been awhile since I read it, so I just went back to bone up and it's been changed? It used to have 2+ paragraphs just about oil, now its been shortened to half a sentence just saying "Added Alysin oil". Guess he is either trying to shorten his Diaries or hide a 'tuner secret'. Either way, it used to say he didnt have a problem with guys running 0W oil on the street, but he could understand if people were uncomfortable with that and that 0W-20 full synthetic would net nearly the same increase. It's coming back to me, I believe he mentioned that they are now making less than zero weight oil but he hadn't dyno'd it yet? something like that. Too bad he deleted it!

The other ZX14's in that vid, with the exception of Jorgen, all were running the same exhaust as me, with Darin the only one not running a base Muzzy map - his numbers show how easily a crappy map can ruin your HP numbers. There names here are ?DogoZX - Darin?, NinjaOfDoom - Sheri (his wifes name), Gilberjj - Jorgen, and I am Tracy. All of us were flies out, aftermarket air filter, PCIII, full exhaust. I was the only one running 0W-20.

I WILL be getting the final word on this increase real soon, there is a couple upcoming dyno shootouts where I should be able to get someone to make two runs, with a oil change in between and a few street miles to flush it through the system.

The roll on between my zx14 and my friends zx10 is schedule for tomorrow. I talk to a brocks associate about oil, but it will be next week before it would arrive and this roll on thing is not that serious. However I am going to run some 2 week old mr9 instead of the 89 pump gas I used last time.
Question:
Which brocks map(track or maxton) do you guys think is the best for a roll on from 2nd 0r 3rd to the top of 6th gear and why?
I have had great success with the track map at the track and on the street, but I have never used the maxton map. This roll on could go 1/4 of a mile to ½ a mile or more. The last thing I want is for him to pull me a bike or 2(due to the maxton map) and get off the gas and declare himself the victor.

All replies are appreciated,
