This is the bike everyone (myself for THREE YEARS!) has been screaming for. The Suzuki engineers claimed that they had several more "tricks" up their labcoats for the GSXR1000 (all without having to retool the assembly line), but they did not want to "blow away" everything else in the liter class. Just be the best.
They have done that. The new CBR was no challange (the RC51 will always be debated, but still rarely compared), but the new R1 is starting to nip at the Gixxer's heels. Some reviews actually say the new R1 is BETTER then the Gixxer. It's getting just about that time for those Suzuki engineers to put up or shut up. Since no retooling is necessary, one would guess that they were talking about things like cams and remapped ECM units, as possible improvements for the Gixxer.
Even the new R1 looks like an engineering "stop gap" bike that will actually lead to further improvements. Even though the Yamaha has finally joined the ranks of the fuel injected bikes, it's still the only one left that doesn't have some form of ram air. The way I see it, those "cool air intakes" under the R1's tank look like a precurser to ram air.
Suzuki and Yamaha might both be waiting to see what KHI produces before they make their planned improvements. It will make for an interesting battle that I dearly hope KHI is prepared to fight. Both the R1 and Gixxer have enjoyed quite a bit of time as the class leader. To snag away that crown in their first year will be impressive, but to keep it away from either Yamaha or Suzuki for a second year will be much more difficult.
Since the liter class will be replacing the 750 class as the "technological flagship" for these manufacturers (which has basically already happened), both Yamaha and Suzuki have had quite a bit of a headstart on KHI. Even if KHI has indeed spent 3 years in development, that still pales to 3 (or more) years of actual production.
Suzuki and Yamaha are both prepared to release an onslaught of improvements on the liter bikes. All they seem to be waiting on is a reason. For KHI to be that reason and become the class leader, they will have to COMPLETELY blow away any other bike in it's class. This is the only way that KHI can even hope to maintain "the crown" for more then the flash in the pan of one year.
Now, it can only make one wonder if KHI does introduce a class leader out of the box, will they too, have a few tricks up their labcoat sleeves?

Well I see it like this. THe ZX9 is a decent platform now. Maybe a few chassis tweaks, some inverted forks, and a few pounds shed the 9 is competitve with all the new *liter class* bikes.
Keep in mind the ZX12s motor is ONLY 3mm wider than a ZX9 engine. Endless possiblities!
I say the new 10 will have 150rwhp out of the box. Piped and fueled correctly, I can imagine the bike being around 400lbs and 160 hp! ____________

Hope you are ready for a wait. As I understand it the "race" 10, is scheduled to be released as a 2004 model! A street 10 is coming out as a 2003, most likely a ZR10 naked bike. This was told to be by a person that is in the know when we were at Laguna setting in Dino's sun shade lounge. Is it possible a 2004 model could be released mid 2003?

I think the rumors are shaping up that way, for a 2004 release of the ZX10R. Now if they make a ZX10RR model available, akin to the ZX7RR model, I'd be all over that!

I'm with swft. If they even hint of an RR version... I'll wait. I too, seriously doubt the 10R will be a '03 release. A mid year release at best, but '04 seems more logical.

The most anticipated motorcycle....... And still waiting......Probably come out the same year the insurance companies and feds make them illegal or limited to 75 miles an hour!! It's all about timing and someone needs to take a look at Kawasaki's clock because they seem to be running late!

You all realize that in '99, folks were sitting around and having these exact same conversations regarding the 12, don't you? ____________

the 12 is still the best big horsepower comfort bike, yeah a GSX-R1000 is just as fast or faster than an '02 12 but I can't ride one for more than 20 minutes as at 6'5" I just don't fit, and the 12 fits me just fine like it is and with the improvements for '02 it's just the best big horse power bike around.

That way you can spend the winter polishing them! With the exchange rate if the 10 was actually in I could buy two for the price of one!!!
