Area P exhaust for the '08 CBR!
What do you think? Kind of funky looking, but it saves 9.5 lbs on an already light bike.
The ZX-10's slip-on only saves 6.5 lbs.

The stock ZX-10R has more hp than the CBR1000 with slip-on but it has tq advantage.

The SS looks better of the two. Not feeling the large, round/slightly oval design of the end can.

who cares about looks of the exhaust when looking at the weight loss and dyno charts you posted
"The stock ZX-10R has more hp than the CBR1000 with slip-on but it has tq advantage." <--zxhoyoa, I've been hearing the Honda has been winning the midrange and up rollons on many track comparisons, did you mean the Honda has the tq advantage?

Yes, I meant the CBR has the clear advantage in the tq department. Honda, by all reports (and I do mean all reports), has built the best litre bike to date with Kawasaki a half step behind, maybe. Give me the ZX-10 for all the reasons I love Kaw's.

We actually did prototype it with a smaller (ie: different size muffler shell). The issue was that the sound level was way too loud. It uses a large diameter stepped (3 x) mid-pipe, into the short muffler, with a large core. Sounds great, very deep, but it's on the louder side of things. So we decided to stick with a larger volume muffler to help attenuate the sound level over a longer duration.
The oem muffler is huge and amazingly heavy. It does work well. But since we are removing a really large volume assembly and exhaust valve, the sound is definetly elevated.
Anyway, I probably have spent more time than most with previous gen 04-07 models. Everything from stockers, superstocks, and HRC Works Superbikes. The '08 is really a cool overall package and a welcome change from previous models.

KB, if you could only choose one to own for yourself, blindfolded, no way of knowing who built either bike, which one would it be?

Oh man. Tough question.... I have great relationships with all the OEMs, but especially so with those two. So.... I would love to own both of them. Actually, I love all the open class bikes from MV, Ducati, Aprilla, and the big four. Just not a fair question..... What was the question?......
My opinion would be somewhat biased because of the way I like bikes to respond. I am more comfortable with a bike that is a little loose, with a really strong, peaky powerband. That's the kind of "feedback" that I can go the quickest on and maintain a given pace. Having ridden the Honda, i just don't see any flaws. It's very electric and precise. It's a very sweet package. Having ridden the 10, it more closely suits my style. If I was blindfolded, it would probably be the 10 based on feel. It revs much higher and I like to use the soft limiter on the track instead of grabbing another gear. It may not have anything at all to do with the lap times and/or pace. They may very well be the same. It's just the comfort level to maintain that pace. Can't see anyone going wrong choosing either one.

Thanks for the response KB. Not having ridden any of the 4 litre bikes, I agree with you on what I like, a nice revvy, strong motor. Your response mimics every review of the '08's that I have read to date. The Honda must be ''electric and precise'' for every tester to have basically the same opinion of it, a great bike that does everything well that is easy to ride fast, but for me the ZX-10 sounds like it excites and even scares a little, that's what I want from my litre bike.
Props to Honda and Kawasaki for continuing to push the bar forward.

I like the little can.
It may be simply that it looks very different from anything else I've seen on the market.
I'm not a brand loyal type...I've owned at least two of each of the Japanese four, with a Bimota thrown in for good measure.
This CBR is looking like a very sweet ride...I may wait to see about a left-over in the autumn.
As an aside, Kerry you seem like a total stand-up guy. Refreshingly low on hype, and always tactful.

My buddy here just pulled 159 at the wheel last weekend on the dyno on his STOCK '07 ZX10. I pulled 169 on my STOCK '08 14. We're anxious to add lots of goodies this summer.

I like your report best YZF. I was trying not to look like a total homer for Kaw when I wrote that. Yes, the 2008 ZX-10R is the best litre bike EVER!
