I reckon the article is ambiguous too. Removal of metal can be polishing which is allowed. & it did not say what part/s of the crank were "altered". The vague reporting encourages speculation... Were the webs of the crank streamlined/lightened and polished. IF...... they were, the Kwakas deserved the win.
If the crank really did contravene the rules it would be good to know exactly what was done to it.

I am waiting to see the 200 or 500 Polished Cranks Honda Produces so that the Crank is a Homologated part of the "Race Package" they sell to everyone of their Customers. I think the rule really reads YOU Cannot polish the Crank other than the Journals. It does not say that it cannot come that way from the factory!!

Saw a picture of the crank assembly on Roadracing World. Never seen a production crank shaft with that kind of shine on it....
