Poll Question:
Hack the Planet: ZX-10 edition

Now that I have successfully proven you can remap the ZX-12 OEM ECU the question comes up "What about other ECUs". It took me more than a year to figure out the ZX-12 and it still needs work. Now someone wants to send me a 2005 ZX-10 ECU to tear apart and find all its secrets. Before I get sucked into such a project I was wondering what the consensus of the community is about whether it would be worth it.

After all you can buy a kit ECU from kawasaki. Its expensive but you can get them. Then many of you have a lot of experience with the Power Commanders and there are a lot of maps out there and lot of knowledgeable dyno guys familiar with that system.

How many of you would put up with the hassle and risk of reprogramming your stock ECU to save some money

What exactly do you think is possible in terms of adjustability? Thanks, Dean

Everything and Anything from the most basic like ignition timing to the trivial.

For example below is the warm up enrichment map for a ZX-12. It determines how much extra gas to dump into the bike when its cold so that it will idle. It's the ECUs version of an automatic choke. The X axis is water temp, left side cold. The Y axis is RPM. Would you like to change it?

I found all kinds of restrictions in the ZX-12 like a custom restrictive ignition map that increases ignition timing 30% between 4000 and 6000 rpm in first gear only. Would you like to change it?

To be honest I'm not that familiar with the ZX-10, does it have secondary butterflies in the throttle bodies like the ZX-14? Do you want to turn them off or change when they open?

Anything the ECU controls, you would control.

Well then yes, I would be willing to go through considerable hassle to have that much control. The kit ECU is about $1500 for everything, what sort of cost do you forsee?

The ZX10 does have secondary thottle plates, though many (me included) pull them out.

Thanks,
Dean

The costs are about $400 but thats for a programmer and software. In other words you don't install it on the bike. A bunch of guys could go in on one and share it around or talk the local dyno guy into getting one.

But first lets see if it is even possible. Thanks to Supra I have another victim....a 21175-0050 '05 ZX-10 ECU

Wish me luck

Well I've got good news and bad news.

The good news is I already have it open and have identified the CPU

I don't know if you can read that but it says MH8206F

This is a well known and documented Hitachi CPU that is used in the Mitsubishi Lancer EVO 7 / 8 cars. The openecu.org forum knows this chip very well.

Now the bad news. They all program their chips from the main connectors via an industry standard port known as an OBD port. The $64,000 question is did they run the OBD port to a couple of 'Unused' pins on the main connectors.

I found on the ZX-12 that the ECU was designed with a serial port wired to a couple of 'unused' pins on the main connectors but that the resistors and transistors between the CPU and the pins had not been installed when the board was manufactured. My big fear is that I will find the same thing here. Is that the difference between a KIT ECU and a stock one? Both are wired for programming but only the KIT ecu has the necessary parts installed? That would suck

On the ZX-12 they disabled the serial port but left a Background Debugging Mode or BDM port on the back edge of the board. Buy just exposing that connector I am able to flash the CPU through what I now refer to as the Back Door Mode port. This Hitachi CPU has a similar development port called an AUD port. I tried to find an off the shelf interface for an AUD port back in may for a different project with no luck. the only one I found was from Hitachi and cost $2000

Anyway until I expose the rest of the board I'm just theorizing. Time will tell.

The only Yosh box I know of is this one http://www.tl1000.com/yafms.pdf

And it doesn't remap the ECU, it adjusts it. Actually in looking through the ZX-12 ECU software I found it has the same capability and even uses the exact same kind of plug on the wire harness as the Suzuki's. (While the plug will fit a Yosh YAFMS will not work on a ZX-12)

Based on the parameters I found in the software I designed and built a 'Yosh Box' for the ZX-12

You can find out more about that here http://www.activeboard.com/forum.spark?forumID=99460&p=3&topicID=9326544

The Teka SFI is a high tech version of the yosh box that uses the same method and port.

I know this ECU setup is used on the ZX-6R/RR as well as the 10. I haven't compared them side by side but it wouldn't surprise me to find the -14 was the same unit also.
