Aftermarket pistons

I went to my first Maxton event, ran 180.9 naked in 5th gear on my first WOT pass, then melted a plug on my first nitrous run. One dry nozzle in the snout, plenty of fuel (11.8 on the log), plugs 2-3-4 look great. Not sure, thining distribution was uneven, gonna stick to all motor or install a spray bar.

Anyway, I'm looking at pistons, and would like to see what the domes look like, but the manufacturers can't provide me pics or drawings. Here's the specs though, any sugegstions / experience?

Thanks,
Dean

For what it's worth, personally I would always go JE. I've known John Noonan at JE for a long time. He knows what he's talking about. Of course he runs the products in all his record holding bikes.

I think for such a critical engine part in a specialized application, it's important to have a key contact who stands behind the product and actually knows what he's talking about. Even if you have to pay more for it. Knock on wood, never had a problem with any JE piston(s). But I don't have any longevity experience with any sprayed motors. So, just an endorsement from my end on JE. Good luck.

I like John too, and he definitely supports the sport. I emailed him earlier this week and haven't heard back, he's probably away from the office.

I got a great deal on the Wisecos, and went for it. I found some pics of JEs, and I'll take some of the Wisecos and post both.

The weiscos are 9 grams lighter? I would go for them all else being fairly equal. I've used them 2 times before and never had any problems.

Here is a stock bore Wiseco. I like the look of the scooped dish in the dome. Same deck height, 10 grams lighter than stock. The 4 were within 3 tenths of a gram, not sure on bore yet. With a thin head gasket the squish should be around .030, OEM was .036. Yee haw. With the race intake cam and a little head smoothing I'm hoping for an honest 180hp. -Dean

You bleed green, I see. Did you pull the engine or do it in the bike. Oh yeah, what cam numbers you plan on using?

Yeah, I lasted about 3 weeks without a bike. I would have been crazy to pass up the deal! I swear!

I pulled the motor, but I had no choice, these are one-piece top cases. It's my first time in the motor, so I've never tried to pull the head in the frame, that's why I didn't respond to your thread. It's pretty tight in there, but it could be done I think. But by the time you get the head out, you might as well drop the motor really.

I'm gonna try the race-manual-suggested 108 int 102 ex with the cams, see how the curve looks. Got a tip?

Is this the same bike with the slip on and made 170 hp or is that the other 10?

It must feel strange going from 500hp + to 180hp

I rode JR's turbo busa on 28lbs boost a few times and never will forget the rush! I could not beleive how fast the shift light blinked red and I crap I was 6th gear!

i dunno what was more a rush the ride or when I turned around and drove back to JR's house off SR210 and saw all the blackies left in each gear. I turned around a couple times needless to say for second and third takes...

JR was going through two rear wheels a week and a new motor once a month...I still want a turbo but don't think my bank account and mind set can handle boost quite yet

When do you expect to have it running?

I miss my bike so bad been so long on the build the only time I can remember working 10-12 hour days is not so bad..

Same bike Rick, it's definitely a different animal than the ZRX, but I like it. Hopefully at the dyno late next week, I'll post the charts. -Dean

Oh NOW you tell me...

After talking to a Ryan Kallina, I set the cams at 108/104. Someday we will move them around a little on the dyno and see if there is anything to be had. Tons of p-v clearance.
