New 06 ZX10R transmission whine
Hello folks,
I just joined the board today(been lurking a while though), got a 2006 Yellow ZX10R 2 days ago. I have a whole of about 70 miles on her now.
I've owned alot of bikes in the past and have always liked to do my own upkeep work on the bike because dealer techs aren't always the sharpest tools in the shed.
An interest of mine for the not so far off future is becoming an MSF instructor. We'll see how that mixes with family time, work, and other things.
I do have a question for you guys with 06's. My transmission, at about 50 miles, has developed a pretty significant whine in gears 3rd and up on the power side of the backlash. No, my chain is not too tight, that was the first thing I checked. I also changed out the oil at 20 miles to get a good portion of the loose metal out of the engine. I'll probably be calling the dealer so as to log this in there system and have a record of my observation. If it gets louder, I'll be looking for some warranty coverage since its pretty loud now. I've never had this issue on any of my bikes before.
Do any of you 06 owners have a whiner transmission?
Thanks for the help.
Bob

I have an 06 zx10 and have the same problem. I brought it to the dealer at about 600 miles on it. And as usual the couldn't hear anything. When I'm in 6 gear at about 84 mph its really loud....I thought I was the only one with this problem. I guess it's back to the dealer.

Mine started whining at about 40-50 miles on the ODO.
I took it to the dealer and they acknowledged the sound. They put a repair order in their system to log it. The tech however says that alot of the Kawi transmissions whine like that and are a bit annoying.
I did some more digging, it seems that most late model Kawi gearboxes whine like that.
I suspect the countershaft bearing since the noise is pretty much in every gear, so it makes sense to keep an eye on that and see if I start getting oil leakage from behind the front sprocket in the future.

yeppers, the gearbox whine is just something the ZX10R has been known to do, my 04 whines pretty bad.....had it checked and there were no issues with it...so it will jsut keep shining....I have about 13 k on it now and its not as bad as it once was, or maybe I am just getting use to it......lol

Yeah that normal for it to whine. My question with the 06 would be where is all the buzzing coming from on the front end of this bike at ~4k rpms. Windscreen? Intake? Front Brakes? Anyone know? It's annoying.

I love it when the transmission whines like that, my 05 model did the same thing...welcome to Kawasaki, its all good.
I sometimes stay in 3rd gear longer simply cause its the loudest there...mix that with the engine noise and the exhaust note and you have the theme song for synchronized madness!
When I first got my 05 ten I insisted to my dealer that there is something wrong with the transmission; even got them to send it to Japan to check it (shit you not). Now I can't even imagine not having it on my 10's...its part of the character.

I just picked up an 07 and it has the same annoying rattles and vibrations at 3-4000 rpms. I am assuming that it is just new and the plastic pieces have not mated together well yet. I sure hope that it goes away eventually.

I never have noticed the noise but I can tell you most kawasaki's have that noise. I have owned only kawasaki's and that is something they do make. I love my 06 zx10.
