2006 ZX10R Clutch Grabs on Launch
I race a 2006 ZX10R and have a problem launching the bike off the start line. No matter what RPM I use, or trying to slip the clutch, I cant get it off the line smoothly.
It grabs very suddenly and obviously shoots the front wheel into the air.
I have no problems with it on the rest of the track, it works great, it's just getting off the start line that is an issue.
Is anyone else having the same problem, or maybe found a solution? The 05 Bike was much easier to get out of the starting blocks.
I was looking for a competition clutch to try, maybe someone has a better way forward
Thanks for the help!

Call Ryan Schnitz.............. If he can't help with a 10R clutch NO one can. OR perhaps Ricky Gadson

Someone on this site mentioned that clutches were coming from the factory with poorly soaked clutch plates. So when I installed my Factory pro Evo Shift Star and Detent Arm, I was checking out the plates and noticed the middle plates were dry and burnt. So I replaced them with some well soaked EBCs' and its much better on starts.

Very very good chance ya have dry plates and fibers...thats a typical dragracing problem with ZX-10R...
I burnt mine on my ZX-10R (2004 ) last year...about a week before it started slipping my 10R was doing exactly what you describe...
all power and wheelie or bog off the line... I replaced the whole clutch to be sure once it started slipping short time after grabiness at the track experience... could have saved the plates and just ordered the fibers...$135.00 is not bad for all fibers...
You should inspect first; thats what Ryan schnitz told me to do... if not slipping during normal acceleration then you might get away with just soaking all the fibers and steel plates in oil...up to you...I would replace fibers to be sure myself...
can soak in oil , reinstall and see how she behaves if you care to...guys that have soaked clutch in oil just to see have noticed a big difference...
here is a step by step procedure link:
http://zx-10r.net/forum/showthread.php?t=12670&page=1&pp=10
just don't use barnett regardless what you find when you inspect... make sure you use OEM...
Hope that helps...

I done the clutch mod on my 06 and it is the 'bomb"...You have to purchase the $118.00 dollar double steel "Judder Spring" steel and then use four of the 04-05 thinner steels to get the right stack height.....You can slide the hell out of it....I'm going to the track this weekend and will tell yall how it works and what my 60ft's are !!! Tryed it in the parking lot and i left at around 7000-8000 rpms and it did not wheelie it just took off really hard barely lifting the front wheel.....

Let us know WRECKSHOP never heard of any clutch mod for a ZX-10R, where did you get the Judder spring steel?
Is this is the first double steel that goes in when steels are installed in clutch pack? if it works I am interested...
geting good 60 ft times is not always easy for 200 + lbs guys with the ZX-10R...tell us more detail of what you are talking about and post results if it works better with mod...where did you find this out? just asking.. sounds like a good deal if it delivers...

Thanks guys I will take the clutch apart and see if it's dry. Since we own a Kawasaki Dealership they shouldn't be to expensive to replace!

I want thicker and wider clutch fiber plates....so what if whole it weighs 2-4 more pounds all together when all is said and done.. present clutch just does not hold up to much abuse..
My ZX-11 has had the same clutch for 14 years and been thru hell several days at the dragstrip and substantial back road abuses ... still works fine...my ZX-10R clutch crapped out in one day at the strip... what I would change are the fibers...
Transmission could shift smother...If hydraulic feature would help then it would be welcome as well...I can deal with it as is if I have to.. just not the best....

Another thing:
Lower first gear would really help ZX-10R getting off the line harder. this is available with first gear swap; expensive unless you do yourself..100 mph factory gearing must be great for circuit racing; sucks for drag racing or getting off the line hard in any racing...I am getting ready to gear down lower a third time on my ZX-10R...be going thru 6th gear in the 1/4 to make it work for me..If I was a pro would be different; guess what? I am not a pro.. have to adjust untill I get that good..lol
does ultra tall first gear all that needed for circuit racing? go figure...

I really don't understand that tall gear. You don't really need that tall 1st gear in a circuit. I only know of one track where you can see 1st gear. Plus, that 1st gear is too touchy when leaned over. That second gear if you approach a corner less than 80 mph it does'nt keep you in the powerband. I think the Honda's got a better useable gear ratio.

Does 16T front sprocket help?? I'm still breaking my 06' 10 in and the clutch is notchy, grabbing in 1st gear. I haven't even pushed it yet. Some have said it will get worse and come apart? Citing stories at dealerships. Not sure about that. Is there an after market clutch and springs for this bike that are better than stock? Why would Kawi install dry friction plates??

Soak the fibers and plates in oil.. doubt if we will ever know why they have dry issues from the factory.. just fix it and move on.. never heard of tranies coming apart...just stories as far as any forum can tell ya....enjoy the bike...lower gearing is relative to what you use the bike for.. I would go at least to 16 front for sure...

I build mini sandrails with the zx10 motor. My first generation cars all had the 04-05 motor. Never had a problem with the clutch. The second generation cars have the 06 zx10 in them. The first test run for the new 2nd generation car was this weekend. I got about 100 yards from camp and it smoked the clutch. I towed the car back to camp and tore the clutch case open. all the fibers were dry with the exception of a few outers. These are 1000 pound sandrails and the 04-05 motor still has a strong clutch. This is its second season. The clutches are definately dry so tear it apart and soak it.
