EXUP valve- need or not

Hey Guys,
This has probably been gone over but plz help me on this. My '06 runs great since I gutted the cat, removed the butterflys and dropped in a K+N and of course a PC. Now I'm really getting tired of carrying around the pair of gross factory pipes. Most of my rides are tortuous mountain curves in first and second gear. If I wound out those gears in the mountains I'd be seriously dead on this bike. I find I have plenty of power up top when I want it -low and mid is what I want to have the most of. Just looking to lose needless weight and pretty up the ass end of this thing. Any thoughts on how different it feels with the exup valve gone? The bottom end rocks with the butterflies gone and I don't want to lose any of that.

It's doubtful with the mods you have done that you would feel a difference with the valve in or out. If you did though, it would probably be in the 3500 rpm area, which on this bike of course is not an rpm that you normally spend alot of time at.... If you go to "Bolt-On" mufflers, you will retain the valve. If you go to a "Slip-On" or a "Half System", the valve will be eliminated.

Try an experiment: Loosen the cables and take them off the exup servo. The valve is sprung to be held open with the cables removed. If you don't like it, put the cables back on and adjust them.

Thanks Mr. Z Head, for a most excellent suggestion. I'm pulling those cables for the next ride and see whats up - esp.around 3500. I've been enjoying making small changes and noticing whats gained. I'll report what I find and only keep the exup if it adds something useful.

If you still have the factory cans on it you are better off keeping youe Exup alone
you wont notice that much diff. without them anyway

I did'nt notice a power gain as much as I was able to smooth up the curve ,but the exhaust note was improved with an akro just my two cents, only in the "street" rpms

If You do get rid of your Exup wait till you get a mid-pipe then you will able to tell the difference

Did the cable disconnect and you guys are right-hard to tell any difference. It may even have felt stronger pulling from 6 and up but cant be sure. Anyway it was a good test and now I'm ready for at least a half system. Funny, on other liter bikes [turn of the century CBR and R1] losing the exup softened the bottom noticably so I was hesitant to do it this time. Still looking for the baddest aftermarket set up. I heard D+D will have one out soon - my guess is it will have small dia. cans like the R1.....
