Rock hard rear shock!

Hi Everyone

I'm new to this forum but was wondering if any of you could help me with my 04 10r. I'm about to embark on a trip to France and want to refresh my bike.

One of the problems I've had is with the standard rear shock. It seams ok on smooth roads but we don't have many of those in the uk. On bumpy roads the rear shock feels rock hard and rebounds too fast off larger bumps, upsetting the bike and kicking me out of the seat.

What's the cheapest way to solve this? I've already tried getting the bike set up but the technician said that the shock is too crude and doesn't offer much adjustment. I've heard that an 05 ZX6R linkage is more progressive and improves the bike but I don't have time to trial this before I go. Needless to say I can't afford a new Penske, Ohlins or WP unit.

Also, what is the best way to improve the brakes?

Your help would be very much appreciated.

How much do you weight. The spring rate on that shock is very stiff. Good for 88 kilos or 195 pounds. I switched to Ohlins because I found compression and rebound worked a little at first then stopped working after 3 trackdays. Don't know why maybe a suspension guy can explain it.

Excessive preload on the rear shock is real common. At 240 pounds in gear, I still had to take quite a bit of preload out.

Thanks for the info guys.

I'm going to try winding the preload right off and see if that helps then. I've also managed to get in touch with someone who's racing an 06 10R and has a spare shock from that bike. We're going to see if it fits so I'lll let you know how I get on.

Compression damping on the 04 shock is stupid hard. Even with correct sag and the compression adjuster all the way out it will still lose traction if you run over anything thicker than a shadow. Throw the piece of jap shit away and get a decent shock. Elka is the best value. Ohlins is for posers and needs revalving right out of the box. As for Redwing's rant on "breaking-in" suspension, I've never heard such a load of bullshit in my life. Stock Jap suspension doesn't "break-in," it wears out in short order. Honda seems to last the longest, perhaps because it sucks the hardest from day one. The 10R forks are ok for the street, but there is a anti-bottoming circuit that makes the last inch of travel nearly rigid. Run it at a track with fast sweepers and you'll get the idea. Or you could take some turkey's word that it's just fine because he can type 20 paragraphs that sound reasonable to ignorant people.
