Replace/Remove Cat Converters
Has anyone removed or replaced the Cats on the 06 ZX10R ? I looked at mine and it looks like the pipe could be cut then gutted but I'm afraid do cut then find out I'm screwed.
Has anyone attempted it on the 06 ZX10R ? Does anyone have a CAT they can sell me on ebay so I can test ?
Reason.... no doubt will make it cooler, I will be able to replace belly pan with closed one, will make a deaper sound, will make more power given less restricion, will be a little lighter maybe .5 lb but I dont really care.
Thanks in advance !!

why would you want to remove them? don't believe there's any benefit, and your exhaust is bound to be significantly dirtier (ie. spilling unburnt fuel into the air).

Removing the Cats will NOT make any horsepower gains without a remap.
This has been tried and with a FULL s=ystem replacement and almost no extra ponies to play with until the PC was plugged in and set up so removing Cats alone is a waste of time other than the full belly pan issue but make sure the enclosed pan doesnt let things get too hot under tha fairing, those holes are often there for a reason, to drag hot air out.

man just go and get yourself a twobrothers slip on and it will do away with the cats altogether. then you will need a commander to help with the hp

I would go with the Arrow or Akra and power commander that would be around $2500. The CAT removal will be a $200 at most and it produces some great sound along with heat reduction for the belly pan. Further, it does flow better then another $65 for the air filter and that will flow it a little more which in turn typically makes for a better sound.
The other note is .... removeal of the EXUP valve always kills low end usable power ... always. End can swaping, mid pipe changes, CAT removal are tyically very cheap and if done right will yeld the best low usable power along with some pretty good sound.

I disconnected the exhaust vavle and I had no low end torque problems on my 06. I think there was a significant gain in the upper rpms though. I also gutted my cats. With cats gutted, stock exhaust, power commander, air filter & throttle secondaries removed I made 161hp/ 79lbs torque. I haven't dyno'd with the exup mod though. I had to richen up between 3200 & 4500 rpms with the pc. From seat of the pants and street riding comparisons my buddy with a 14 thinks I picked up at least 4-5 up top with the ex. valve mod. We'll see on the dyno though.

Removing the valve gets no more top end...it's open above 5k anyway...what you're feeling is only what want to believe...and btw, your low end torque had to have dropped big time...those numbers you posted...they're pure stock numbers for any non-modded 06 10r. I make the same numbers as you on my 05...mapped and flies removed (which has zero effect on the top end)...

I hate to say this FBA but, you are wrong about the sec. removal not making gains on top-end , if you look at my Dyno results I increased HP thru-out the powerband by about 5HP after removing & tuning for No Flies. I ran before & after same day. It was about 7hp peak increase from dynoed w/ flies in.
Now this doesn't hold true for the 14. Why I can't say. Cuz, I haven't figured out that one yet! But, I'am workin on it!

There was a definite increase in top end as tested against my friends ZX14. Yamaha's original exup would block the down stream end of the exhaust when it was fully opened. I modded that and the bike would run into rev limiter after that mod. I wouldn't doubt that Kawi might start to slightly reclose the valve at the close to top revs. I didn't lose any bottom end either. I will dyno it and see and let you know. Got that ZX1kr.

Na, I got it covered. I have to come up w/ a better solution for changing that carriage from HD length to sportbike length.
Thanks for the offer though! Did ya decide on a pipe? Or gonna keep playin w/ the stocker?
