CycleNews likes `05 ZX-10R better than `06
In this weeks CycleNews issue #10 article titled OPEN-CLASH on the top six liter bikes, the '06 ZX-10R finished last. One of the conclusions was that the collective testers like the '05 better than the '06.

Eh, seems some people just don't like to 'rate' or 'class' performance bikes based on their performance, huh?
Reminds me of a british bike mag's shootout years ago where they rated supersport bikes based on several factors, to include long distance comfort, fuel tank range, storage space, and passenger comfort/accomodations. Amazing, the lack of perspective some times in people.
I think my 06 kicks ass.... do you not like yours?

No sir, I haven't... though I wasn't drawing a comparison from that particular article to the little blurb there about that british mag. Not directly, anyway.
Either way, it's pretty subjective stuff. In stock trim, most of these bikes are pretty damn close to each other in the performance area. Kawasaki engineers (as well as a host of other people who have ridden the thing) agree that it (the 06) is indeed a faster/smoother bike than the 05. Uglier? Depends on who you are. More fun? Depends on whether or not you like that smooth/precise feel over the brutal power feel. I do believe, even though I have very limited saddle time with an 05, that the 06 is a better bike. Not necessarily everyones' flavor, but that's a given with any update on a good existing model.
I'll make sure not to respond to things I haven't read... especially in such a vague way. Maybe you could repost/link the part of this article for those of us that don't have access to it...? I will certainly read it and post something more informed. I'd certainly like to know how they came about their decision.

We all know that Kawasaki designed the 06 to be a better track weapon, but that may not translate well to the street or the fun factor. To me everything I have seen or heard about the 06 makes me want to keep my 05 even more. Heavier flywheels aren't a good thing for the fun factor at least to me. I seldom do track days, I am a street rider, 80% of my riding time is twisty roads and the other 20% is getting to them. A heavy power hit adds to the fun factor. Nasty ass wheelies add to the fun factor.Long black stripes coming out of corners adds to the fun factor. From what I have read, the 06 has tamed these things so it is easier to ride. So that being said, is the 06 a better bike? Probably yes, Is it a more fun bike? Probably not. I am a stand it up early any pin it rider and the 05 suits my style perfectly. I is already too easy to ride already.

A Uk mag alos placed the 10 last out of 4 Gixer 1000, Blade CBR, Ri then the kwacker.
However this was prior to me buying a ZX10 so i had no particular axe to grind when reading the article. In fact it was this article that made me go out and buy the kwacker. Why, ?
Well they placed it last because the massive amount of power bordered on "out of control", the fact that "wheelies are fun but not everytime you twist the grip" and generally they felt it wasnt "as planted" at the front end. However they did concede that they were all using differnt stock tyres and in the UK that means Dunlops which are pretty crap compared to BT014s or similar. So with differnt tyres would that front end feel more planted...possibly.
Either way i went straight out and ordered my lovely black beauty as everything the professional testers (!) down rated it for were the very things that a 1 litre sports bike should be about. It shouldnt be practicle , get a Honda Pan European for that and it should be just slightly "too much" , if i didnt want Too much i would get a 600 and save a few quid in the process.

Those are some pretty good points mister; I won't deny any of them. In fact, I agree that all those things are a ton of fun. I'm here to tell you, though, that you can get coax the 06 to do most of those things if you want it to (aside from the 'hit' in the powerband... though if you were really commited, you could probably figure out a way to dial that in too). It just doesn't do it until you ask it to. I think they forget to mention that in all these shootouts. Any of these bikes rip monstrous wheelies and can leave gruesome marks on the pavement.
Fun for me, as strange as strange as it may sound, is 'precision'... in the fact that it feels like I can control when the bike does these things. That type of control just makes me giggle. Far more amusing that being leaned over on my favorite mountain road and finding a dip or hit in my powerband. The easier the thing is to ride (to me), the more fun I can have with it... the more often I can do stupid stuff without the fear of getting bucked off.
Sounds like a matter of taste/choice, really. Do you like it wicked fast & compliant, or just wicked fast? They are both awesome bikes though, and you'd have to be high to think that a 160hp+ bike isn't fun, no matter how smooth it is Whether or not the 06 is more fun than the 05 (or vice versa) is more a matter of riding style and opinion than actual machine prowness. I'm probably in the minority here, though heheheh

Again fun is the main thing here. So ii boils down to this: Is the 06 that much more fun than the 05 to justify going out and buying one? Not to mention that the 05 is probably the best looking sport bike I have ever seen and the same can't be said for the 06. Also like I said, the 05 is almost too easy to ride for me. I like it a bit unruly, that is part of the fun. So that being said, if I were looking for a track bike, the 06 would be my #1 choice.

My 06 is by far the best bike I have ever had it kicks ass on and off the track and that will soon come to proof , CW takes every thing in to account like ride, comfort looks, ( I think it is the best looking bike on the road) and I will challenge any other 05 or 06 model to catch me if they can. even the lighter more nimble 600s out there.
the 06 zx10 is one mean somebitch

I didn't put a lot of stock into what all the magazines said about the '00 ZX-12R, before I bought mine. After riding it for three years and almost 50,000 miles, I never regretted my decision in buying it. I also paid little attention to magazines when I traded my beloved 12R for a '04 ZX-10R. Like the 12R, I have yet to have had a moments regret of my choice.
If someone said I could make an "even trade" of my '04 for any '06 liter bike, I might pick a Yamaha R1 LE. Since, that "option" isn't likely to happen (not quite a "even swap" financially), I'd take the new 10R, without a doubt. Not that I bleed green, because I don't. Sadly, neither my bank (who has the current note on my '04) or my dealer has not made a "even swap" proposition, I'll just keep making payments on my "old school" '04.
Funny, any of the current crop of liter bikes would be thought of as "superior" to my '04. At least according to the magazines. The thing is, I don't ride "magazines". Nor do I ride like those who write for these magazines. Since the is likely a "skill level" difference between myself and these magazine writers, their viewpoints mean about as much to me as that of Mr. Rossi making suggestions to me on which bike I should buy.

motorcycle.com has the zx10 06 second, but for a small marging. it has 6 hp more than the gixxer its 166.
Im going to buy one at the end of the year.
for me any of the 04+ bikes is 2 much for any rider to make a real diference in the real world.
