variance in horsepower rating

I notice that the 04 ZX10R is rated at 161.9 horsepower at 11900 rpm
the 05 ZX10R is rated at 158.4 horsepower at 11,500

why is this so?

Rated by whom?

If a magazine or anyone but the factory then as salsa says, there are a lot of variables.

Doesn't affect crank hp, or a brake dyno.

Does reduce the figure a Dynojet will report though (due to being an inertial dyno) though I wouldn't think by 3.5 hp.

Anyhow, is it different ratings by Kawasaki or by a magazine or whatever? You will see far more variance than that between SAME YEAR examples of the same bike in such tests, so if that's it, then there's no story at all.
