Area P

Did anyone need to add a USB power commander, after they installed the 15" Area P slip on? What does a power commander do? I notice when I shift at 8,000 rpm, that I hear a cracking or pop sound. Is this normal? 2005 ZX10R

You do not need a PC with the 10 and Area P Slip-On. The stock fuel curve is perfectly ok.

The PC allows you to adjust the fuel delivery/curve. A slight pop or backfire can be caused by many things. You might check for a slight air leak at the junction of the muffler and/or collector where the Slip-On "slips" on. There are several other things that can cause it as well. I wouldn't be overly concerned about it.

Evander, Kerry and the crew at AreaP can do that easy for you...he will sell ya one with out the badging.....but why? I like my AreaP and get lots of complimnets on it, along with questions....my buddy is fixing to put his GSXR1k back together after a low side and wants to replace the scrap Yosh tri oval with and CF AreaP....he loved the sound and the craftmanship is first rate...I WANT everyone to know what it is....so they can ENVY me for having one....:P

+1 HDL, I love my Area P and won't be giving it up unless I happen to get the 06 and then I'll need pipes for that. Hey Kerry, have you already made the pipes for the 06 yet and if so do they look alot better?

Evander - Can do, no problem. The "badging" is a high temp mylar sticker that comes off very easily if you choose to not run it. But of course we can simply include them in the hardware kit "un-installed".

1b7 - Good to hear from you again. Even if I did happen to have an '06, I couldn't confirm it..... . But as soon as I do/can, you'll know about it!

Yep, still working on it. Taking a completely different approach to the "norm".... But what we learn on the '04-05 model, will corelate to the '06 as well.

I'd like to get a can but the police are really cracking down on aftermarket pipes in my favorite riding areas. I'd like to get added performance but not unwanted attention. Looks like an "unbadged" AreaP will be ordered soon.

I would wager to guess that when you guys buy the Area P, you will most certainly not be dissapointed with it. I've had mine for almost a year now and I still get compliments on the sound and how it looks. So don't just sit there go get your Area P now!!!

The quieter version slip-on should work well for ya then - on the bike, sound levels seem just barely louder than stock.

k bryant...just wondering, but why are D&D's so loud? Is it pretty much a straight pipe? Or is the packing loose so the gases bounce around? I hear D&D's dont produce alot of HP. I mean if it is just a straight pipe slip on I would think it would have the highest HP gain, but just would all be really high in the RPM band.

Umm..... Tough to give you a short reply on your question(s)... The simplest answer would be core diameter/design/length, shell diameter/length, packing material/assembly, inlet/exit diameter/length, mid-pipe length/diameter. In the early years Dave (Rash) use to be known to state his pipes did not make more power than stock. He would not join in on any magazine shoot-outs because he'd lose out to many competitors. I believe he was even quoted in a magazine stating such. But as time went on, obviously it made "sense" to alter that mind-set, get a dyno and R&D crew and produce pipes that make power. I have alot of respect for Dave. He's been around the block and deserves respect for his longevity in the industry. If I remember correctly, Doug Polen was sponsered by him at one point. And obviously Doug has "hero" status as a racer.

As far as "straight pipes" making the highest hp gain. We can't state that as fact with a "blanket" statement. To an exhaust designer, when you say "straight pipes", we take it as just that. If you say an "unbaffled exhaust", well that's completely different and a properly designed "unbaffled" exhaust can be designed to make big, big power. It is competely dependant on the engine state-of-tune, surrounding limitations, and the ultimate goal of what you are actually trying to accomplish. Motogp engines make max power with 130 dbA open exhaust. But they also make more torque and within a few points of that peak power with slilght "baffling and/or backpressure. The Yamaha is a perfect example of that (they use a "muffler"). One of the primary reasons for open pipes in Motogp was to improve on the "show" aspect of the event (their opinion....).

Stock street bike engines have many limitations. Powerband placement, sound regulations, overall fitment/design, astectic appeal and style of the final package. As a general rule, no, straight pipes do not necessarily make the highest hp gain.

holy shit...i have a headache...in other words why are D&D so loud, you pretty much answered that...but do D&D lose HP or gain HP? I am wondering. I have a buddies D&D for a zx10r laying here and wanted to throw it on for some annoying loudness, but just wondering what the effects are...any why they are so damn loud compared to competitors slip-ons.

This is why it is such a pleasure having k bryant on the board. I am not a big aftermarket pipe fan, bur having Kerry here to help, share knowledge, etc. is what convinced me that one of his pipes is in my near future.
