Question about MPH in 1/4 mile

After viewing the videos of the zx-10 on www.dontbescaredracing.com, I was left somewhat confused about MPH in the 1/4 mile. The video of Norm Jackson on the blue zx10 shows him running 9:30s at around 151mph, stating his only mods were gearing, strapping, lowering, and an Akra pipe.

Now I was always told that MPH and horsepower are a direct correlation. A stock zx10 makes around 153hp to the rear wheel, and the best trap speed i've seen for a stock bike is around 147 (magazine test, corrected conditions). The bike in the above video is probably making 161-163, so what explains the high MPH?? Can low gearing help your MPH that much??? I was thinking 4 mph is pretty drastic for the mods that were listed. Now granted, the guy definitely wasn't dicking around during the first 60 feet :P

Yes, gearing can definitely help the mph that much. Going -1 +2 is an easy jump of at least 3 or 4 mph in the 1/4 on a literbike, a full pipe will also add a couple mph. Of course, this is only if the rider can really ride the crap out of the bike.

In dragracing, the 60ft times will also change the mph. A slow 60 with some tirespin tends to translate into more mph at the big end...then there's also a point where the 60ft time drops, but the mph drops a little as well...but then once the 60ft is quick enough, the mph goes up again. I haven't watched those videos in a while, but it wouldn't surprise me at all if that 10 mph'd up to 153 or 154 with some tire spin.

Don't ferget he has the help of MR9 fuel ; stuff is supposed to be very good for extra hp. I believe he used extensive Dyno testing with a powercomander for fine tuning his ZX-10R also....

That video was taken in 90 + degree temps, when Norm was still getting aquainted with his 10...Yes, he uses MR9 and it does everything people say it does!!!

If you see Norm now, on that same bike he's going much more ET and MPH...I cant tell you guys the actual times because theres a BIG GRUDGE RACE coming up on October 30, 2005 at RacewayPark, Englishtown, NJ...

Eric, I have seen stock 10s making more than 165hp with a pipe and MR9!!!...Any bike with around 170hp will go 150-151 in the 1/4 mile...

Thanks for the replies guys.....I didn't know this guy was also running "alternative" fuel in this video. With that being said, i'm sure he's pretty close to the 170hp mark.

Crotch Rocket....what you said above applies to someone of average weight, correct?? Because I know a particular guy who's always at the local track who's running a piped Busa, but weighs probably 275. He only manages high 130 trap speeds.

Average weight of 170lbs....That guy is a heavy heavy hitter, bogging the 60' causing him to have even lower MPH...

Dont forget that you can lose about 10hp for extremely hot weather!!!

He weighs 280lbs suited...

I weigh 200 suited and used to trap 141-142 on my piped Busa (168rwhp).

Went to 2 intake cams and started trapping 144 consistently (178rwhp). Have a not yet mapped 1397 and was trapping mid 147 in Bradenton a few weeks ago in 94 degree heat. Mph is a reflection yes and no.

My runs a few weeks ago were short shift and still 147. I am +1 on rear and stock up front.

ALOT of variables in there. Do you ever race? You should come to Bradenton in Nov for Runday Funday...

The new liter bikes (especially the R1's) seem to make very good MPH in the 1/4 with a light rider (key word) due to high rpm HP and not as much TQ.

My buddies bone stock Busa made 2mph more on average than his 10R but he is 200lbs suited.

Many variables...

Good info. I don't currently race, because i'm waiting for my radial mount adapter brackets for the lowering straps. Also waiting on a friend to hook me up with one of his "patented" (lol) kill switches. It's totally self contained in the factory kill switch housing. He uses a female headphone type jack which he solders in parallel to the factory kill switch. Attaches a male plug to the wrist lanyard........looks really clean!

I have only been there that one time - but the rumors are true. That place HOOKS!

Just check the track locator links at www.nhra.com for their schedule - i don't know their direct link.

I do know i will be there in Jan and Feb as much as possible (3 1/2 hour drive from Jax) in prep for next years points series at Gville...
