ZX10R mods

it strikes me that there don't seem to be all that many mods for the 10R, unlike the boatload of mods for the 12R. i'm talking primarily free or cheap mods/tricks you could do yourself, but also aftermarket replacements parts. i'm thinking adding a mod directory to this forum would be a good idea, but not having a 10R myself, i don't know what they are. so now i'm asking all y'all.

please reply with any mods you know of, what the results are (power, handling, weight), how effective it is (HP, lbs, etc), and the approximate cost. once we've got a decent list i'll put it all together into a clean and easy to navigate list.

so who's gonna go first?

When I replaced my chain, I added a couple of links which pushed the wheel back some in the swingarm. This improved the stability of the bike at high speeds (less twitchy).

Double Bubble Wind Screen: More wind protection. Still not as good as the old 12 though.

16t front sprocket (-1 tooth): Quicker acceleration. Lost a little top speed, but not concerned about that.

The normal mods: Scott's damper, Arata full exhaust, PC3 USB, BMC race air filter, Galfer SS brake lines, Ferodo front brake pads, frame sliders, speedo healer, Vortex rearsets, seat cowl, Dino mirrors.

Now that I have 2 (two) 2 ZX10R's (1 in California for winter and one in Canada) now and they are both identical except 1 is black 04 and the new one is green 05 they have pretty much the same parts too!:

This how much I love these beasts.

Full Ackropovick Titanium Evolution 1 & 2 Exhaust, PowerCommander 3, Lowering links, Adj Side Stand,Galfer Brakes & Lines,Euro turn signals, Scotts Steering Damper,Yellow Box, Michelin Pilot Sport Race Tires. Ohlins shocks, Euro Bikes fender eliminators, 520 Renthal chain conversions, Adjustable lowering links.

You really do not need much else.

Performance Mods

Jardine Slip on - slight gain
BMC Race filter - slight gain
Muzzy Damper - confidence builder
Brembo MC - BIG TIME confidence builder
Gafler Superbike lines - to make a now great front brake system even better
Gafler HH pads - hard to tell if it is an improvement when combined with the other items
16T counter sprocket - more gear selection on tighter tracks, acceleration
Michelin Power Pilots

Free Mods

Emissions hardware removed - no real difference
Exhaust Valve disabled - no real difference when done during BMC/Jardine install

Non-Performance Mods

SpeedoHealer - to correct 16T
DIGI Gear Indicator - just to be sure, harder to tell what gear I'm in with the 16T
Vortex Adjustable Rearsets - better seating position
Muzzy Frame Sliders - crash factor
Euro signals F&B - poser factor
Rear Seat Cowl - great increase in tail storage capacity
Valentine V1 - when I'm not so cautious

Not counting the V1 (already had on 12R) or tires (normal wear item), I'd guess the rest of the stuff adds up to around $2K. I have little interest in spending money on anything else beside the suspension. First the fork internals and then replace the rear shock. Both are items are in the far distant future since I am not too worried about the stock set up after it's dialed in the best it can be. To be more realistic, both are way beyond my current budget. When ever I do get around to getting the suspension items, I'm hard pressed in seeing anything else that I would either need or want. With the exception of cheap race plastic for track days.

Flush out the oem coolant. It's made from concentrated hamster urine. Add some water and water-wetter. Very cheap performance mod. I'm running 10-15ºF cooler than stock.

I wish there were some magic bullet that really made a difference. But I think a slip on and a filter are in my future.
I was watching a superbike race today and the front brake lever and MC on one of the bikes was just awesome. I don't remember who's bike it was on, but I want one. It looked like it pulled a cable, very trick looking.

OEM Flush mount signals - Total stock look minus the frog eyed stock signals
Acumen Gear Indicator - More flash than anything but nice to know visually what gear your in
HyperPro RSC Damper - Def must if you got a heavy wrist.
Champ91 No Cut Frame Sliders - Crash Factor
Champ91 Swing Arm Slider / spools - Crash factor and rear stand lift point
Champ91 Front Fork Sliders - Crash Factor
Rear Cowl - More for looks but dont get asked to give rides since no seat and no pegs
SATO Ti Slip on - Seat of the pants dyno says more gogo power and better sound
Tankslapper Tank Protector - Clear removable protection for your tank
Pazzo Short Levers - Looks and moved levers further out from grips. Good for big hands and great look.

I do not have ZX-10 but have a 1070 (3mm overbore 2001 GSXR1000) but a few locals here who know me and my addiction too engine mods and carbon fibre too! I will try just about anything. A few things I have listed will not make peak hp, most are aimed at boosting the low and mid range, I have plenty on top! while others do make hp. All I have found to work in my application. Our motors are in theory very similar and you should see improvements.

Some work both for bikes and automotive applications. So ya get an extra freebie.

Miltec-1 from www.laniganperformance.com or here http://www.eliteone.com/neo.htm
use 1 ounce per qt of oil. Not an oil additive, a metal treatment. My bike runs cooler, and shifts smoother. STP oil treatment also works good for smoother shifting. Also put a few drops on the chain. I swear by this stuff, not just for the bike also in my truck, tranny, rear end, power steering pump and the lawn mower!

The oil from the second link, I have not used and will try out as soon as I find more info and closer distributer. I have my best results with Aysin (hard to find) and Red Line 0w oil. I run a mixture of 2qts 0w/20 and 1 1/2 0w/10 along with 3oz of Miltec-1.

Brisk Spark Splugs. Do a google search for them and a local distributer. While they did not last long in my application, which is due to the heat range. It was equal to the CR9E and I need a cooler plug CR10EK's with my motor too prevent spark knock. I thought with the plug and the unique tip which is solid and goes in further into the combustion chamber would work. The ydo not have and equal to the CR10's yet. I made 1.8 hp on back to back dyno runs with brand new CR10EK's versus the Brisk Plugs. They are pricey @ $18 a pop. On a stock (non bored motor) I beleive you will see good results.

Plasma Booster. This I could not say for certain you will see gains with the advances in ecu (32 bit vs my 16 bit) This basically doubles your spark. The gains are made in the mid range

Used to be distributed through White Tip racing but that link is dead now. This link is from a google search. I did not find one negative post in over 30 site searches. The mfg could lead you to someone. Works good in cars too just read the replies from the below google search.

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&ie=ISO-8859-1&q=plasma+booster&btnG=Google+Search

Airboz. A very well made product and works to keep your airbox pressuirized at low and mid range speeds. PLEASE if you do not agree with it, that's fine, just save the negative replies and ignore. I seen some negative posts on other boards when someone asked if anyone has tried. All the replies were from folks who never purchassed one and were talking out loud.

It works very well in my application while riding around town or less than the insane speed where the ram air comes into play. More for mid range, but does not make a big gain on top.
http://www.clearinnovation.info/suvairboz.html
E-mail them and they will send you lots of technical stuff and real world resuls from roadracers. Works again with automotive applications.

This one I have not tried and heard from a friend that has for his kids go kart which his son races. Pull the seals, clean the grease out and replace with tranny fluid and put the seals back on.

I have ceramic bearings which did not show any hp on the dyno, but if you have the chance to take one and an oem bearing and spin one with your fingers you would be sold or just push your bike. Mine is light as it is , as well as the 10 but I do beleive in them.

I have a Akrapovich evo full ti system that had the cf can. Made good peak hp over 8k, but lost some down low. So if you ride in the twisties or your riding area does not include long straights, unlike us Floridians that have mostly but straight roads with the exception of the on ramps. You may find better results with a slip on or smaller headers.

I replaced with Tsukigi 17" short can (Akra is 21") yes, it is bit louder but not like a D&D pipe (No offense to those that have a D&D but they seem to be very, very loud) K Bryant sells pipes and he maybe is selling a short can and with his knowledge could expand on the short vs long cans as well as pipe designs which are more suited to your riding area.

If I lived say in North Carlona as example where lots of curves exist, I would be very disappointed with the Akra vs the Hindle I had prior which made better low and mid range power. This is hint...match your pipe to your riding style and don't get hooked on dyno number claims. I made the same hp I made with my first pipe the Hindle (regular version, not the BDE) it was a bargain priced pipe at the time but had no oil filter access with the early versions. Just changing the end can. I was very surprised with the results and I picked up a little from 4k than just went up from there.

The 1k, had a throttle body mod where you remove the secondary set of tb's blades and repostioned. Some other stuff has to be done to get rid of the FI error codes and you have to remap. I'm surprised to not have seen this done with the 10. Maybe it has, I just have not read about it. Makes top end hp.

Not sure again with the 10, but the GSXR1000 2001/2002 models the foam airbox seals suck. I used some good ac foil tape to seal the area where the airbox meets the metal inlets from the frame. Added a few mph on the top.

ECU mod- extend teh rev limit and will be doing this in the coming weeks. I have a few other things but will not post until I get eitehr a wide band commander or an LM-1 for on the fly a/f testing. Done many, many fuel combos and still doing research. Some fuels blends have worked, or partially worked depending on where in the power band and the spefic fuel gravity and others I know work. 6 psi with 2 up on the rear my old Diablo spins all the way down our local 1/8 strip put a M/T and had to drop it too 12lbs, now have new Shinko and 25psi I have no traction. Fun though!

I'm just now getting into the strip and lot to learn but all the above mods I listed above made noticble improvements down low and the mid range. The mph in the 330's and the overall mph prove it with me sleeping at the line, soft launchs and dropping the clutch. The Barnett cf clutch will not slip, I finally got my OEM one in yesterday and will go in next week hopefully.

I do feel some if not all the mods (Plasma booster and TB are ?) listed you will see a benefit . I like all bikes and would say i'm certfied bike mod nut if such a description exists..

Good Luck and If helps at least one person that will be a plus and what I visit boards. Some I refuse add input.

Rick
