lost keys - Order from Kawa ? OK, don't ask me how, but both keys to my ZX10 are gone... lost... poof, vanished.
I need to get replacements.
I have one dealership telling me they can cut a key based off the "code" provided by the dealership when I bought the bike. The only problem is they have already tried this once for me and the key didn't work.... they think they may have messed up the cut, which is fine, except I have to drive about 1.5 hours out of my way to get to this shop, just to have em botch it again.
I have another dealership telling me they can not and do not cut keys, that all they can do is order blanks or they can order an actual key from Kawasaki for me based on the code I give them and the serial number of the bike, proof of ownership etc.
Anyone know whether it is in fact possible for a dealer to cut the key provided they have the mental facilities needed to do it right, or if I HAVE to order the key from Kawasaki ?

i dont know, but my experience has been...
on the two factory kawi keys that come with the bike, the dealer usually hands u one of them and the second one as a little metal tag with an alphanumeric number imprinted on it. that number is the one the dealer can use to replace the key.
if u dont have the number, u should be able to contact/call kawi with your vin number and they can get you that number.
keep in mind, both ways usually require that you show proof of ownership with id in order to do it.
keep us posted and let us know how it goes in the end, curious to hear the end result on this one. good luck man!

On the Euro spec ZX10R, the key actually works with a receiver that wont' allow the engine to start unless it receives the right code from the key. So Euro bikes must have the keys replaced by the factory. US/Canada bikes don't have this feature, so any key cut correctly should work.

Yeah, I've got the code, registration, sales paperwork etc, so I'm good on the proof of ownership.... according to the one dealership, there's a reference in one of the service/dealership manuals that references that metal tag code, and that is what tells them how to cut the key.
I am gonna try to take the afternoon off from work and run down there to see what the deal is and see if I can get a good cut this time. Luckily the shop is run by good guys so they're only charging me for the blanks until they get it right.... in the meantime I'll probably order a replacement from Kawa through the 2nd dealership, just to make sure I have a good factory cut key at some point.

That's what I was thinking! They should do it right the first time. Are they a Kawasaki dealer?

Yes they are a Kawasaki dealer, however the first time I went in to have the key made they were having problems with the key maker and weren't sure they would get a good cut, hence not charging me the $20-$30 for the key and only charging me for the blank ($2).
What I failed to mention the first time is that they aren't charging me for any anything else until they get one right and I choose to have a 2nd one cut, so basically, for my hassles, the first key is going to be $20 cheaper than normal. Yeah, its not optimal, but hey, life goes on. They're good guys and I don't care about the $2.... they've easily hooked me and saved me more than that in the past.

Call a locksmith he can cut the key with the Kawasaki Tag or most can do cuts by "feeling"the inside tumblers with a tool.Good luck..........

well now that you got a copy of the key to work, you gotta make copies for everyone on the board. or just post some pics from your ride and we'll call it good

my 7R before getting stolen... first bike I got after a 8+ yr hiatus, and coincidentally the one bike I'd ALWAYS wanted and never had before...
my friend's 999, same as above
same 999 - Full carbon fiber front/fairings, carbon fiber tail section, carbon fiber hugger and front fender, termignoni (sp?) exhaust, Ducati Racing clutch assembly, & Marchesini rims.
Dumb ass put almost 9g's into the bike AFTER buying it and then had to turn around and buy a Monster S4R because he was too afraid to crash this....

Some pics from the NOPI show in Maryland this past weekend that a good friend of mine took.... they're technically property of overboost.com, but I figured they might be appreciated here for a few minutes... even tho there's mostly busa's (which I complained about..haha)
