A frame-crack report found on the web
pooh over on labusas found this:
http://www.psychobike.com/cgi-bin/ikonboard.cgi?s=53dab4b0f96fe9c7bab6f178c85c31a2;act=ST;f=6;t=8124;

The original poster is not the owner :rolleye, and says the owner "is not a big wheelier".
Another datapoint for Sherm, I guess. I am not super concerned as I don't plan on selling the 10 soon, nor do I plan on wheelieing (sp?).
I've got 8000 miles of twisties on mine and no signs of fatigue or cracks.

I am learning to wheelie on my 10.
I mousetrap it alot more than I want to.
I panicked at around 12 0 Clock the other day and came back to earth quite furious. I don't think that should tear the frame.
I wouldn't even call that a crack. That looks like the frame is tearing to me.
I am the one who posted the pic of the 10 that was hit by a truck.
Not to show the damage of the accident but to show how thin and how much the metal look like it 'tore'
We all know our frames are light and thin. But damn I don't want to deal with the frame failing on my bike.
I wonder how these bikes are going to be after a few years? They could have serious long term wear issues. IE totally worthless after 3-4 years of riding.
I hope not as I love this bike more than anybike that I have ever owned or even know about.
I will get rid of the bike if this starts to be a wide spread problem.
It would hurt me, but I'd get a Honda.

yeah the same attitude from the guy that had the air intake runner/brkt break and expected KHI to warranty it after knowing he slammed down one to many wheelies.

I've got a guy I deal with in Indianapolis who makes frame sliders for race teams. His buddy who he says is middleaged and NOT wheelie freak has a frame crack on his 10. Seems somehow 1 of the engine mount bolts came loose and the resultant vibration cracked the frame.
This guy is no attention whore and very down to earth so I have no reason not to believe him. A loose motor mount bolt could cause a frame crack very easily. Nice attention to detail Kawasaki.

Wouldn't that be Kawasaki's and the dealer's job? Especially while still under warranty.

a bolt loosening has zero, squat, nada to do with warranty nor does it have anything to do with the dealer's job, it has to do with the owners job period! A bolt or screw of any type coming loose is quite common place with ALL brands and not something ya run to your dealer @ every given moment to repair.

Excuse me, but if an engine mount bolt comes loose at all, it was not torqued correctly to begin with. If the result of this loose bolt translates into a cracked frame, it is a warranty issue. It is not expected of the rider to be checking the torque on engine mount bolts before and after each ride.

your right not after each ride but within a reasonable time frame the bike should be checked over thouroughly by its owner. Now as for the said motor mount bolt not being torqued properly from the factory theres absolutely no way to prove or disprove it wasn't.

No, while under warranty, it is the dealer's responsibility to cheque tightness when they perform the scheduled services. A bike owning Accountant is now expected to be checking torque?? I hardly think so.
If the bike is still under warranty and a motor mount bolt becomes so loose that the frame cracks, then it's simple, it wasnt torqued up correctly at PDI and or manufacture. An engine mount bolt does not back off when it's torqued correctly.

If the bike was serviced by the dealer and the dealer was supposed to check and torque the motor mount bolts, either at the riders instructions or because it is supposed to be included in the prescribed service, then the owner may have some recourse with the dealer. But if the bolts were not checked and tightened by anyone, then I doubt that KMC would be liable for any damage.

Well now you opened a diff can of worms my friend as thats the first time you mentioned a 'scheduled service' so my question to you is: was the bike taken in for a scheduled service or not?? if it was then i wouldn't be debating this dumb issue if you had mentioned it earlier because i would have agreed that such items should be checked. If the bike was not taken in for a check up by no means is the dealership or KHI responsible for the bolt coming loose. Geeeez man it don't matter if he's an accountant or a fuggin hairdresser get into your own stuff and give yourself piece of mind by knowing its handled by YOU!!

Nope, once again not so fast to point the finger when you can't prove or disprove! and that is simple.

Check your manual. On all my bikes, during scheduled services, it says that various fasteners are checked.
I'm assuming the bike is serviced at the recommended intervals by the owner, if for nothing else, to keep his warranty valid. And in my experience, all fasteners that are prone to vibes, hard stresses etc are also installed using a form of loctite. If you take a brake caliper bolt out, you'll see a white film on part of the bolt. That's the form of loctite they use. The stuff works ONLY if the bolt is secure in the first place.
Don't believe me? Put some loctitie (blue) on a bolt on a big 4 stroke single, then fasten it hand tight. It will still vibrate out. If correctly torqued, the bolt will out last the bike.
Just look at all the computer nerds who own bikes these days. Most of them don't know a shock absorber from an air filter. They ride, maybe check the oil and adjust the chain and take their bikes into the dealer for anything more involved. That's why dealers who don't do what's recommended on a service like checking fasteners are asking for trouble.
My KLX lost a Dzuz fastener on the left side cover between the time I picked it up NEW to my home. Dzuz fasteners are not supposed to pop out. It cost Kawasaki a new plastic cover with all the Dzuz fasteners, as a separate fastener is unavailable from them. I see no difference between this and an engine mount bolt coming loose and destroying a frame with the resultant vibrations. It's up to the Dealer and Kawasaki to fight it out on wether this was a PDI problem or a manufacturer's defect. The customer did nothing wrong. Same with the an engine mount bolt.

How do you know that the " customer did nothing wrong" .. you are arguing a hypotheical situation about a person you've never met and a bike you've never seen... The A&P (assembly and prep document which outlines the dealer assembly procedures) does specifiy the engine mounting bolts in the "fastner check" section. It is my understanding that the last time the dealer must check the engine mounting bolts is during the first 600 miles service.
It's the owner's responsibilty to actually take his/her bike in to the dealer to have the service performed. Many people never do. It's also their responsibilty to maintain their bikes on their own. (AT ALL TIMES)
So what's your point in all of this? You have a friend who took their bike to the dealership every 1000km and paid them to do full services because he/she doesnt know how to use a wrench. He has receipts for every one of these services and they detail what work was done.... so the bolt backing out (if it even happened.... this is "DirtyBill" we're talking to here) is the dealerships fault?
I just dont follow your arguement.
Or you have a friend who serviced the bike himself the whole time but the bolt backed out?
Let's see... you start your story with "I know a guy who knows a guy who met a guy....."
How is a bolt loosening off a "warranty issue"? Every bolt you;ve had on any bike that comes loose you run down to the dealership and claim foul? It's a warranty issue? What about on that Guzzi you drive? Bet that never vibrates any bolts out? Yep... warranty
What's your point other than the fact that you have no point at all

Certain posts have been removed from this topic. It has been brought to our attention that there is a group of members who do not own ZX-10Rs who are trolling this thread with the sole purpose of upsetting members who do own ZX-10Rs.
We generally do not condone the wholesale removal of threads or posts, however in this case, due to the important nature of this topic, we feel that it is necessary.
The discussion surrounding the potential problems with the frames on the 04 ZX-10R should be a concern to every owner, if proven to be accurate.
We encourage such discussion here, however we do ask people to stay on topic. This part of the site isn't for mud slinging. A topic this important is not a place for internet trolls to waste member's time and create potentially unfounded concern amongst ZX-10R owners, nor is it a place to spread unfounded rumours.
So... the moderators of the site are watching the topic. Any off topic discussion in this thread will be removed.
Want to have a general BS chat? A topic about a potential frame crack issue is not the place for it. This part of the site is dedicated to technical discussion surrounding the ZX-10R for it's owners and enthusiasts. We have a general discussion section on the site which can be found in the main forums index.
Thanks for staying on topic.
