I love the "someone is watching out for me" attitude. How do you get that from an event of such incredibly hideous misfortune? The guy is still a hero for going racing the next day. Ya gotta admire that.

I'm wondering if his faceshield would have stopped or deflected it. At some tracks I'm in the 170s on the straight. I just never contemplated an event like this.

Good question. When I was racing cars, I got hit in the face shield with a large piece of concrete picked up by a competitors tire. Fortunately, I was wearing a Simpson helmet that had a face shield about twice as thick as any of the current Arai, Shoei or Suomy face shields. I would think that nail could have gone right through a normal face shield.

The screens we use are made of polycarb they would have prevented the nail from reaching your face. The material is very good at absorbing energy. There is a less opticaly clear version of it called lexan thats used for bullet proof windows and on cockpits of aircraft. I have fired pellet guns at polycarb lenses and was able to made a nice dent but not penatration. A drug enforcement officer was hit by 00 bucks shot durring a drug raid and the lenses he was wearing were imbedded with the slug but not penatration, the slug stuck in the lens looks like a rock after it drops onto a smooth sandbox. The poly material mounds up around the projectile. A nail at 170mph has less force than a shotgun projectile traveling at 1200 to 1500 feet per second fired from at point blank range.
