Sato S/O
I ordered the Sato S/O and PC USB from Dan Kyle about a month ago or so. Although I was not crazy about the sound of the pipe from the link on the Sato website (too high pitched for me; I love the deep sound of a Jardine) or the pipe's long, plain looks, I really liked the claimed horsepower gains. After much debate, and after seeing that full systems were not producing a large gain in the mid-range, I decided on the Sato S/O. I went with the new oval canister because it is about 1 pound lighter than the round or carbon canister (according to Dan Kyle).
Dan Kyle was great: easy to order from, friendly, answered all my stupid questions, and shipped on time and as promised. The can and s-pipe came well packaged (bubble wrap/double cardboard). Even so, when I opened the package, the can had a small ding near the nameplate. Given the original packaging, I am convinced that the ding must have happened at the manufacturing location and was missed by a quality inspection. One phone call to Dan Kyle, and a new can was on the way. The new can was perfect (although I did have to slightly bend the top tab on the can in order to tighten the top spring). I think the issues I ran into were a result of the oval canister being a new product for Sato.
The welds and quality of construction are excellent. The sound of the Sato S/O is much deeper in person than the sound clip on the website (although still not as good as a Jardine).
Now, the most important part for me...performance. I dynoed the bike with 1,400 miles. The bike produced 143.5 hp SAE. While the bike was on the dyno, I removed the cat from the stock muffler. I ended up with 144.3 SAE hp and 74.1 lb SAE torque. According to the dyno, as a result of removing the cat, I gained about 3 hp in the mid range (between 7-8K) and approx. 1 hp on top. Although the bike sounded better, I really did not notice any performance gain from removing the cat while riding. I rode the bike for approx. 1,800 more miles before installing the Sato. I did not notice any improvement in power from additional engine break-in over that time.
I then installed the Sato S/O and PC USB (with Dan Kyle's map)...like night and day...it felt like a tremendous gain in power and the engine seemed much more responsive to a twist of the throttle than it did with the stock can. The power flow was very smooth on the bottom end and would absolutely rip through the mid-range to the top-end.
I then switched from dino oil to Motul synthetic oil. I did not notice any difference in performance from the change in oil.
I recently went back to the same dyno (with the same dyno operator) to see the results. Dan Kyle and Sato claimed a 9 hp gain from the Sato S/O and PC USB. I thought that was a pipe dream for a slip-on and was hoping for a 6 hp gain (but expecting something in the 3-4 hp range). At the dyno, I had approx. 3,300 miles on the bike, the Sato S/O, PC USB with Dan Kyle's map, and Motul synthetic oil.
All I can say is WOW!!! The bike pulled 153.5 hp SAE and 76.0 lb SAE torque!!! I had a 9.2 hp gain and a 1.9 lb torque gain. Not only are these overall gains impressive, but the gains throughout the mid-range to top end
are really surprising to me. Big hp and torque gains start at 6500 rpms and continue through 12000 rpms. The hp and torque remained the same as stock below 6500 rpms.
I am not sure what, if any, gains came from the additional miles on the bike or the synthetic oil. My ass-dyno tells me that the vast majority, if not all, of the gains came from the Sato S/O and PC USB.
Here are some pics of the pipe and the dynos:
