I went with the Nikon D70. Maybe not as good as the Canon 20D but has the right price for what you get.

I have the Canon G2 right now and was looking at the Nikon D70. How do you like it? Did you get it as a package with the Canon lens and how do you like the lens?
Jeeeze, now I gotta look at the new Canon.

I like the Nikon alot. It comes with a 18-70mm AF-S lens. I bought a zoom lens so I can take pictures at motorcycles races and catch them in action. This thing is extremely fast, it can take over 3 frames/sec. Haven't had a chance to see how it stops the action with the motorcyles.

Hi Warbird. I have the 10D. I prolly have the best testament to the durability of the 10D. Last year, I highsided my ZZR1200. It tore one of the Corbin beetle bags off the bike, and the camera was dumped out of it's bag onto the road at about 90mph. It tore the 80-300 lens in half, with just the base of the bayonet on the bike, and popped the door open and chucked the cf card out as well. Walked back and found the camera (with the remains of the lens on it) and the cf card. Got home, stuck the card back in, got the remains of the lens off and then stuck the 18-55 lens on. Fired it up, took several pictures, no probs! The case has a couple good scratches in it, but I'm amazed at just how tough it is...

Uh oh! Even worse:

The $8000 EOS-1Ds Mark II, Canon's new flagship digital SLR camera, features 16.7-megapixel resolution and a full-sized 24-by-36-mm CMOS sensor that eliminates focal length conversion issues. The company is hoping the new camera will appeal to professional and commercial medium-format film photographers.

The EOS-1Ds Mark II has five preset color matrix settings, improved support for the Adobe RGB color space, a new white-balance correction feature, a 45-point autofocus system, and other enhancements. The camera has five image-quality sections ranging from RAW (16.6 megapixels) to Small JPEG (4.2 megapixels). Users can configure the camera with 20 built-in Custom Functions with 65 settings and 27 personal function settings that are uploaded to the camera with dedicated software; those settings can be transfered to other EOS-1Ds Mark II cameras using a memory card.

The camera features a fast start-up mode that readies the camera to take pictures within 0.3 seconds of being powered on. It can capture four frames per second at full resolution for up to 32 JPEG or 11 RAW images. ISO options range from 100 to 1600 in 1/3-stop increments. Shutter lag time is measured at 55 milliseconds. It uses an EF lens mount and also supports TS-E and MP-E lenses. The camera also includes support for Canon's E-TTL II Flash control system, and is compatible with EX-series Speedlites. It has a 230,000 pixel LCD and an estimated battery life of 1200 shots per charge, according to Canon.

Two card slots accommodate Compact Flash Type I or II and SD memory cards, and the camera has a FireWire interface to connect to a Mac or PC. Wireless connectivity is also an option: Canon has introduced the WFT-EA1 Wireless File Transmitter, a WiFi adapter that connects to the camera's FireWire interface. No pricing for the WFT-EA1 has been announced.

What zoom lens did you get? That camera is supposed to stop action like film (no lag).

Any of the digital SLRs will do that. About 90% of the time, it depends on what you came from in the film world. If you have a huge collection of Nikon lenses, you'll buy whatever Nikon camera trips your trigger. If you had a buncha Canon lenses, same deal.

That 20D looks interesting. I am currently shooting with the Canon 1DMKII. All I can say is WOW (sold my 1Ds after getting it)! The 8 frames/second is awesome for action shots and the AF is lightning fast. You tend to ride a bit more cautiously when you have that kind of gear on your back though:o.

I'm seriously considering a 20D. Would be a nice upgrade to my 10D. Might have to start over with the lenses to get the correct focal length, at least for the 18-55mm one.

Don't bother getting new glass for the smaller sensors.IMHO I would stay away from the EFS lenses.

Looks like I can get the 18-55 lens and camera body for $1600, or maybe a bit less. That's the cheapo lens, vice the $700 EFS lens.

If you can afford the fast 'L' glass, invest in it. They are opticaly superior and hold their value quite well.

I wish Minolta would get with the program with a digital SLR with completely interchangeable lenses. I've always been a long-time Minolta fan. I sold off my complete film SLR setup...what's taking so long for camera technology to get up to speed.
