Speedo issues

While out riding on Saturday I had to get home early so I had to slab it home. Once on the highway my speedo started playing up telling me all different speeds from 30mph up to 70 mph. I was probably doing about 90mph (6500rpm in top) and the it packed in coompletely and showed 0mph. Shortly after this the FI light came on. Every so often the speedo would come back to the correct speed for 30 seconds and the FI light would go out, then the speedo would go back to 0mph for a few minutes and the FI would came back. I had stopped a couple of times shut the bike down but the problem was the there as soon as I started it up. Once of the highway on my way home the speedo came back, FI light went out and it was fine for the last few miles.
Anyone else seen this?

I've already had the oil pressure switch replaced and the front wheel after it was found to be warped. Don't get me wrong I love this bike but it is now starting to piss me off.

I am seeing this too.

Matches your description exactly.

I found that if I touch the wires coming out of the sensor on the front sprocket cover - the speedo jumps back to life..

I was thinking I may have overtightened it after removal when putting on the -1 front.

Have you had the sensor bolt out???

You need to check the vehicle speed sensor. It's located on the left side of the engine in the center of the cover just above the water pump. The ECU for fuel injection needs this info to figure out the fuel mapping. Also the electronic speedometer gets its information from this same sensor. There's a diagnostic procedure in the shop manual that checks for either a wiring or sensor problem. You should see an input voltage to the sensor of between 9-11 VDC. With the engine stopped but the ignition switch ON, you should read a voltage of 0.05-0.07 VDC. The voltage will raise as you spin the engine sprocket. There's a Kawi wire adapter to break out the signals from the harness for your volt meter: 57001-1400. You may be able to probe the harness by inserting the probe leads through the backside of the sensor connector. The first volt check determines if you have a wiring problem. The second voltage check determines if you have a sensor problem. If both of these pan out, you're looking at an ECU replacement. But since your bike is still under warranty, the dealer should be able to take care of this.

FYI:

When I did my front sprocket swap I left speed sensor un-hooked in order to have a local mechanic loosen the nut holding the front sprocket for me.

Noticed the FI light came on during this short period ;when I hooked speed sensor back the red trouble FI light turned off as normal again...

Thanks for the info guys, I spoke to the dealer about it and they knew nothing. However it's hopefully going in to the dealers at the end of the week to have the new wheel put on so they said they'll take a look. I'll let them know what you said ZX10 guy.

If you two collaborate I may be persuaded for $150. Assuming that we're talking about the old wheel of course!

There is one main conector that connects to the whole guage. Before I get down and technical on it, I would just unplug this connector and re-seat it and clean the contacts before I go further. It's worth a try.

I would agree with you on this except the issue with the FI light coming on. That means the ECU isn't receiving the correct signal from the speed sensor and thus that's where the diagnostics should begin.
