Tranny issues for reals

Now that the recall is official, maybe enough of the bloom is off the rose and someone will tell me what they think is wrong with my gears/clutch. At least without turning it into a "my bike is so perfect you must be a gixxer/honda/yamaha spy" bullshit fest. Upshifts are not an issue ever, but downshifts can be a bizatch. There are a lot of times I have to let the clutch out and pull it back in again to stir up the box, otherwise it is just not going to downshift. I suspect the clutch is at fault, and is not releasing properly. If I remember to pull the clutch all the way to the bar before starting to shift, it is usually fine.

It's silly trying to troubleshoot this over the internet. Take it to a competent mechanic and get it sorted. Or keep bitching about it and do nothing...

I agree, I've got no problems, but that doesn't mean you don't. Take it to the dealer and have them look at it, it's under warranty that's their job.

We have 3 ZX10's in our local ride group and none seem to have any transmission problems. bovinespongiformencephalo, based on that, I would have to say that they problems you are experiencing are not characteristic of the bike. Have yours checked by a competent mechanic. But another way to look at it is that none of us has had any front wheel problems either and that is being covered by a recall. Good luck.

If I've got this right, bovine, you're saying that you can't hold the clutch in and change down through the 'box without letting the clutch out periodically to engage the gears and allow you to change down the gearbox further.

I don't think I've ridden even one Kawasaki (of any model) where it has been possible to change down through the gearbox without occasionally letting the clutch out and then pulling it back in.

I think you can do it with some Suzuki's, but I'm not sure about Yamaha's or Honda's. I've never tried it with them.

I can go up and down through the gears without ever touching the clutch. Just a very slight movement of the throttle to unload the tranny. Best shifting I've ever experienced.

Not at all. I can easily move from 6 to 1, even at a crawl. The box will not change down from 3-2 at about 3k to 6k rpm unless I pull the clutch lever to the bar before attempting to shift.

I have that same problem on my zx7r. But it wasnt like that stock. ONly happened after I put heavy duty springs in the clutch.

no probs at all here... smooth and nice... MUCH nicer than my old 12R or the 636 I have sitting in my garage. Gotta love the slipper clutch!

BSE, I get a similar problem on upshifting. Mainly 4 to 5th. Pedal felt like it was against the stop in 6th. Pull in clutch, release, out and in again and normal shifting resumed. The more miles the better it gets.

I'm hoping it goes away completely - and untill it does it consistantly theres no point going to a dealer

I bet if I had the same problem as you my dealer would fix it.

Now, now. Can't we all just get along? Since Bovine started this thread I have put all the lights back on and took my bike out for a spin just to explore the tranny. Never really paid alot of attention to the tranny at the track, just slammin' gears. Now I know my trans is fine. I'm curious as to how this turns out for you Bovine. It just adds to the tribes knowlege when one of us has a problem and reports the fix.

I had a similar problem when down shifting usually when I was coming to a stop. The shift lever would not budge until I blipped the throttle like the plates were not releasing. Also shifting in general never was very smooth which I figured was something I would have to live with. Changing to Mobil MX4T around 2k miles didn't help.
Took it to the dealer who said the clutch plates looked almost dry. Kawasaki support suggested changing back to dino oil & soaking the plates over night.
I picked up the bike Saturday & was amazed at how great it shifted. It is like a new transmission.
