front and rear sprockets?

Tomorrow I am going to order some new sprockets and chain and I wanted to see what kind everyone was running. I was thinking of going with the vortex sprockets dropping 2 in the front and staying stock in the rear. Anyone found a better combo for street/drag use as far as ratios go?

Turbo,
my new bike is fitted with Renthal Race spec sprockets 16t front standard on the rear with a 520 Regina Race chain very little losses from this combo with a wicked looking chain. If you drop 2 at the front I think you will have great difficulty keeping it pointing forward, the bike has more than enough snot to pull the higher gearing taking into account the close ratios from 2-6th but hey your choice could be interesting.

I've changed over to a DID erv525 chain with 16/39 gear set as an all purpose setup. I've been a proponet of DID erv2 520 chains for years but chose to stick with a 525 this time around. AFAM & Renthal are my sprockets of choice.

I am fairly sure Norman Jackson and others are running 15 tooth front for drag racing;

I find 16 front is bit sluggish for dragracing and ok for street use.

15 front makes it hard to keep front wheel down during top of first gear with stock suspension settings (so far)

I will see if 15 front is ok for dragracing after lowering links and strapped down.

Still...I like 15 front for easier launches/take offs and street riding fun. I like second gear response much better too and don't mind short shifting into second as needed.

I am keeping stock chain; see no need to change myself.

Taste has a lot to do when choosing.

Like BD, I prefer DID ERV chains and have a +4 link 525 on mine. As for sprockets, it's AFAM for me. Just don't call the AFAM rep in SoCal. He has attitude issues. I got the whole setup from Dan Kyle.

Salsa1, Set your rear shock to max soft settings. That will reduce your wheelies.

Thanks BackMarker I have setting rear suspension to soft s my plan for the dragstrip. Bike is a blast to ride with 15 front ;midrange in lower gears comes on sooner. I like it and recomend it myself.........I can also see where new longer chain would increase wheelbase;just don't have a real need for now; maybe in the future.

I think I would rather get a swingarm extension and buy a chain for that instead to dragrace and get more benefit for my money.

Have funl; stay alive!

Guys if you set the rear soft, then the rear will squat too much causing the front to be higher thus causing wheelies as the RPM rises, if you arent already in a wheelie from the initial snap out of the hole!!!...Check out Pics of Norm Jackson on www.DragBikephotos.com, click ENTER, then PROSTAR 5 Norwalk, then sportsman streetbikes page 2, 3, 6 Norm is on the Blue ZX10 and look at ground clearance!!!

I have seen and inspected some of the Pros suspension set up and NONE of them are soft!!!...2 down in front and stock rear sprocket with OEM chain are fine...If your not capable of running 9.30s with a stock ZX10, then you dont need the lighter chain or all of the tricks the Pros use......Just passing on the good info and helping you guys to save your money for mods that really help us Novice DragRacers!!!

Cool CrotchRocket.... will try different settings on the street to see what it does;

Can't hurt to try different settings so not a real big deal . I can make sense that if you have some "give" (softer) on rear suspension wheelies may be controlled some .

will still require judicial use of clutch for good launch as I see. I know several hardcore dragracers at the track who gladly give me what they think will work. I will do what works best for me don't see much to worry about just need to try and see.

Have dragraced for fun on various occassions;have no plans to turn pro just have fun and really hope to do nines as a first. Don't really care to be precision like consistent with short wheelbased ZX-10R.

I got the huevos and enough skill I believe ;am not hung up on anything .will keep an open mind as needed - so far all looks good.

Thanks!

Have fun;stay alive.

Here is one case for reference info and what I had in mind to try thus far........ note 100% soft compression and 100% hard rebound.

1. At the dragstrip, I am at 100% soft compression and 100% hard rebound for both a stock tire and sometimes a Schinko. It's always worked really well for me, but I weigh around 155 suited up.

Sounds like you should either slip the clutch more, or add 10-15 lbs at that pipe area mentioned above.
=========================================================

2. my 12R does the same 'power wheelie' at the upper rpm range of first. (stock WB) the more you can slip the clutch, the less it will want to wheelie.
A lot of people set up that rear shock for a good amount of compression to get that rear end down, then a hard rebound so that it resists coming back up.

I've only had a problem with 2nd gear a couple of times, but each time I just kept in it WOT and it rode out. be careful not to instinctively pull up on the bars during that 1-2 shift. heck, it's hard not to!
