Disabled exhaust valve?
Has anyone disabled the exhaust valve? Here in Switzerland and Germany quite a few guys have disabled the system on the stock pipe just by disconnecting both cables from the motor located under the seat. Only takes about 5 minutes and can be reversed with no probs. Nobody I know has done any dyno runs but most believe the valve is only to comply for noise regulations. The bike does sound quite a bit better with the disabled valve, noticeable at idle and at revs below about 5k. I haven't noticed any loss in performance (seat of the pants only!) and there is no hesitation even when whacking the throttle open at 2k in 6th gear.
What do you guys think?

So, whats the deal with this? How does one disable the exhaust valve? What cables? I am willing to give this a shot.

here in Europe quite a lot of ZX10R owners seem to have disabled the exhaust valve. I haven't seen any dyno runs comparing the mod to the original setup, but my seat of the pants dyno suggests there is no big difference any way. To disable the valve you have to take off the seat and the little plastic fairing held by two screws just in front of it. Then you can see the motor that is used to actuate the valve. With a 10 mm socket wrench you have to loosen the screw that holds the pulley on top of the motor. Then lossen the clip securing the cables and dismantle them. I suggest you secure them somehow to prevent them from falling down (cable tie). Reinstall the pulley, the fairing and the seat and your ready to go. The result is s somewhat throatier, deeper sound, in the lower rpm range with no noticeable drawback. Its for free and can be reversed in 5 minutes!
If you want to hear the difference the valve makes, start the engine and pull on one of the cables manually to simulate actuation of the valve. You clearly will hear the difference.

I am a little confused. Are you saying that this "thing" is under the rear seat or the front seat? On the rear seat, just below it (closer to the front seat) is a little fairing (maybe thats what you mean)?
Are you saying that under it, I will see what your talking about? Is it a little motor that turns a little bit when you turn the ignition to "on"?
Is that what I should be messing with?

Sorry for the confusion. It is the little motor located under the rear seat. You just have to remove the little "fairing" between the front and the back seat (only two screws) to access the motor. Yes it is the motor that turns a little bit when you turn the ignition key.

So this valve doesn't drift shut or partly shut when both cables are free?

How would hurt low end performance? Any aftermarket full system doesn't have a valve in it. It may just cure the dip @ 4k.

I just disabled mine and I agree with kawiralph, the performance feels near the same but the tone is a tiny bit deeper sounding.
Why the factories spend the money installing these in the name of low-end performance is beyond me - I'd gladly trade that thing for a factory installed steering damper.

Im very confused. What am I doing? I took off the small plastic thing & also the front seat as well.
I unplugged both sets of wires but didnt unbolt anything that Ralph mentioned (as I am not sure why you unbolt something that isnt plugged in).
The bike sounds mostly the same to me at idle, but the FI light comes on & stays on if either plug is unplugged.
What do I do?

Rich, don't unplug the servo because the computer will frown...as you have found out. If the light continues to stay on then you might have to 'clear the computer codes' - disconnecting the battery "might" do this, but I'm not sure.
Take an 8mm wrench and remove the bolt & pulley from the servo. I would suggest holding the pulley with some large slip-joint pliers so as to not damage the gears inside the servo while loosening the bolt.
I then tie-wrapped the two cables together.

i just took the cables off the pulley and unhooked em on the bottom side too.
the discard acordingly.
im just curious if someone has had enough patience to take a 1/4 angle phillips and take the butterfly off the bar inside the exaust pipe??. when the damn things closed the head is facing the wrong way to get to it.
