The carrier is aluminum and the rotors are steel. The discoloration you are seeing is from the heat build up in the steel rotors.

I don't think it's a coating - if anything a coating of paint may have worn/dissipated off revealing this very uniform and half circular pattern on the rotor close ta where it attaches (RRW just had a blurb on some prototype brake disc Honda had and I was wondering if Kawi had one too).

I assume you are talking about the area of the rotor that doesn't actually have the brake pads on them. The small areas that are between the braking surface and the rings between the carrier and the rotor, and yes that is from the heat. Next time you go for a good ride, reach down and feel how hot the rotors are when you get off. The reason these and every front rotor on a sportbike now are a semi floating design is because they get so hot they would warp if they were solidly mounted. My race bike is doing the same thing, and it is perfectly normal.

I don't doubt that it's normal (due to the uniformity of the discolorations) - I just wondered if the discs were of 2 different compounds.

...my 10R has 1 mile on the odo...I doubt very much that the tech rode it hard enough in that one mile to heat up the disc (I trust him that he didn't)...it has the same uniform bi-color the d speaks of on the edge of the discs thats parallel to the road surface...try standing over or in front of your front wheel, you'll see it...hmmmm...the mystery and inquiry continues...

Ya know K, I once had a disc pad on a car fall out and rub against the rotor...I heard the noise, noticed things were dragging a bit, and pulled over. Looked at the wheel, could see the rotor inside GLOWING. Jacked the car up, and used a spinner lugwrench to take the nuts off. Pulled the wheel so air could get in there and cool things off. Fixed the prob once things were cool. Only problem was the lug nuts had MELTED into the asphalt! ____________

K True statement. Learned that one the hard way trying to do a quick tire change between sessions without gloves. Needless to say, blisters were the word of the day!!

I find it hard to believe this is a serious question. Bi-metal? WTF? Did you actually expect the swept area of the rotor to remain the same color as the unswept area? This is a troll, right?

he's talking about the edge of the rotor (right?)...the edge part of the rotor that's parallel to the road surface of an upright bike, not the braking surface area where the pucks touch, but the outer edge where the pucks can't even touch...think of the part of a 'standing' coin that contacts the surface its standing on...its THAT edge...why is it two different colors?...thus his serious question: Is the rotor a bi-metal composition?

...are you looking at the same cross section edge as we are?...crouch directly center in front of the bike...look at the discs...seriously: why is the edge two different shades?...does it go all the way through?...maybe its nothing...maybe its something...whatever it is, its curious cuz' I've never seen anything lke it before myself....c'mon, D, step in here!...is this what you're talking about?

It's a stainless rotor. The stamping process that produced those "petals" necessitated some paint to keep the cheese factor in check. Other than that it's standard issue Jap oe. Bi-metal... pass that crack pipe this way, ya bogarts.
