My take on Steering Damper - SO FAR...
All,
Let me preface this by saying I AM NOT A SQUID.
Whew.
This was a special occaision...
I just spent a weekend in Eastern Arizona, carving twisties up the Coronado Trail.
I appreciated the quick steering on stock tires and geometry in the really tight shit by the Morenci Mine. Gravel all over the road, 15 MPH speed limit for 29 miles!?!
I hit the Salt River Canyon (US60) this morning on my way home. This is a very wide road with 270+ degree switchbacks and some really FAST sweepers.
I exited one 120MPH RH turn (oddly, it was marked 30 MPH ) passing bicyclists (fucking idiots, BTW) and knowing they were rocked by the wind of my passage... anyway, in 3rd, WOT (yes, I found the throttle stop), the front started to shimmy on me while leaned over (and no, I did not have my knee down, but it could have been).
I think the bike needs a damper only if the speeds are over 100 MPH and you can really hit the throttle.
Less speed, and you want to adjust out all your damping.
That's my opinion. I will get a damper someday, but not until I ride this bike HARD on the track, like the day it's paid off...
