I looked at my rad last night.

Over 50 bent fins already.

This thing wont make it for a long time without some type of guard.

Dam wormie.... I don't want to know anything about what the '05 has improved on. I haven't even made a payment yet on the '04! I'm gonna have my son take a look at making something.

...does that hardware cloth actually help deflect small hard stuff like the cox guard...or does it just keep the bugs off the fins?...I want bug protection AND road debris/tar protection...like the extruded aluminum mesh of the cox guard...what is 1/8"?...1/8" thick cloth or 1/8" mesh hole size?

1/8" x 1/8" holes. The material is wire about the size of fine safety wire. Dude, I run dot race tires. They pick up anything that isn't glued down and shop peen the radiator with it. It works for me. I got the idea from a pic on Graves' website. If you wanna make it bulletproof, fold it over itself into a double layer and leave an air gap. Or, if your sphincter is really pinched tight, buy the same expanded aluminum sheet Cox uses and cut that to size. Be a little harder to fold the edges for a finished look, but it's here today and costs about $63.50 less. There are a bunch of places to zip tie shit to the radiator, so installation is cake. Or you could make one with hardware cloth over expanded metal that would kick the Cox thing's ass. I did that on my R1.

...hey,BD...do they need the whole bike or can they just get away with the radiator to shape/form the screen?...I figure it could be "radiator only" cuz' it'll attach and fit closely and tightly to the radiator..wouldja know?...if its equitable, I might have a radiator I could ship out to them to expedite matters...y'know...for the team

Yea I have one on a gixxer.About First thing I bought for it. I was replying to the fact that someone thought they were screwed. Does seem kinda lame that they are listing them for sale on their web site.

I have seen some made out of other things. If so inclined go to a local steel supply and pickup some grating and cut to fit.Either weld a frame with bolt mounts or zip tie it.

I justed shelled out 55.00 and got a Black aniodized one. 5 of us bought at once and got a discount. I like it it is an easy install(took about 5 min on mine and it works.

With the altered airflow on the radiator any over heating problems? How far have you ridden at one time with the protector installed? TIA

Last ride was about 150mi on a cool day. It ran cooler. I've used this stuff extensively without effect on the cooling. It's still going to be more of a racer thing. The latte and leather crowd will be wanting Cox. But then they always are.

...or the sport-street riders who desire a 'finished' look...the money I save by NOT ordering up lattes at foofoo coffee shops and buyng frilly leather at your local motorcycle boutique (I make and drink my coffee or tea pure and buy only good sport-riding or racing leather ) will be more than enough for to pay coxracingroup for one of their screens (if I haven't already fab'd up my own black-anodized version with finished edges)

wormhole missed the play on words I guess. Make it 13" x 13". That fits the sides perfect and leaves material at the top and bottom to zip to the rad mounts. Try to have it sit 1/4" to 1/2" away from the rad in the middle. Better protection. When you realize the thing is invisible, you may decide it's good enough for a permanent fix.

From the "oh NOW he tells me" dept.:

Keep an eye on the points where the guard contacts the radiator. It's not like a braided stainless thing, but still merits routine observation. This would be the case with ANY guard. Even Cox.

Let me know where you secure the upper left (as you sit on the bike) corner.

I used both radiator mounts for the upper points but noticed the screen stickin out on the way here to work.

Thinkin bout runnin some electrical tape down the edges just in case.

I might just buy some small rod and run it through the folded over portions ta kep the mesh offa the radiator and also not worry bout the edges stickin out.

Crap - guess I might be spenid another $4 at the hardware store - where does it end, the travesty.........
