15 tooth front sprocket?

Can anyone think of a reason not to?

I found my best track times by coming off of the clutch quickly, by 60'. Problem is that the engine is below it's happy rpm range after that. I think a 15 tooth front sprocket may solve this.

I've heard of GSXR people going down 1 in the front and up 2 in the back. But, the ZX has a much, much taller 1st gear than the GSXR, so maybe it needs a full 2 down in the front???

Two reasons. Chain life and horsepower. Not very significant in either instance but still very real. It would be better to go with a low friction race chain like the DID 520 erv2 and a much bigger rear sprocket to get the gearing you need. Then find a road with turns in it before someone sees you racing in your mom's clothes.

I already installed a +2 rear AFAM alloy sprocket, and am much happier now. 1st gear is just too damn tall for me, and makes slow hairpin turns difficult to modulate. I like increasing the rear gear better than reducing the front for the reason palomartian stated: chain life. Although it is a marginal difference, it is easier for the chain to turn around a larger sprocket than a smaller diameter one.

One warning tho: if you go up a couple teeth on the rear gear, you will need a longer chain, which increases cost considerably. But, you can then move the rear axle back quite a bit, both to get the tire off the hugger (if you're running a 180 rear, as I am) and to effectively lengthen the swingarm for better suspension movement.

FWIW, Dan Kyle suggested that I stay with a 525 chain, as the Kawasaki race team has been shredding the 520 gears. Too much HP, evidently!

I installed my 15 tooth front last night. It seems OK, except that the chain is getting close to the rubber pad on the top of the swing-arm.

2 teeth up in the back WITH a 16 front sounds good. DID chains are universally available.

I got both the AFAM sprocket and the DID ERV chain from Dan Kyle at http://www.kyleusa.com. There is a phone number listed on the homepage of the site. Cool guy -- really knows his stuff, especially about suspension. Just spoke to them today: they got my Ohlins shock yesterday and are setting it up with the proper spring. I should have it early next week. Also, the Ohlins damper should come in next week. Sweeeeet!
