Street riding with numbers

Hey all. I was considering joining a MC. One of the clubs sponsers trackdays. Some of the tracks they go to require numbers. However, I heard somewhere, can't remember where, that street riding with "race" numbers is illegal. Anybody have any info on this? BTW I'm in California if that helps with the legal stuff. TIA

Evan

I don't have any idea, but it seems like California is the most represive state in the US, so it probably is.

Nothing illegal that I am aware of, and don't see how it could be. But you are absolutely asking to be hassled.... Save it for the track. They supply you the numbers/plate sticky at the track anyway.

I have great big numbers on my daily driver...on the right front, on the right rear, and HUGEMONGOUS ones on top...aaaaaaand....I have traversed waaaaaay over the posted speed limit...have seen 100+ a few times on the occassional light traffic'd freeway...very exciting, very dangerous...yet sometimes 'fun'...but no one hasssles me at all (heh heh heh)...nuh uh...in fact, I even have even occassioned a pass on the local black and whites cuz' they were in the way...sooo....wear your numbers all you like...the bigger the better (heh heh heh)...there's nothing illegal about it that I'm aware of...but puhleeeez....just don't make the streets your personal racetrack, ok?...yer' gonna make the cops wanna 'race ya' (heh heh heh) and get yer' racer-boy autograph...and...depending on the situation, they might even provide a free meal, lodging, and even clothing for you...and ensure that your fancy numbered motorcycle is kept in a security monitored parking facility while you're enjoying your bed-n-breakfast

Yea, what KB said. At one time, we had 8 to 10 guys who all rode our sportbikes together. One of our group had numbers on his bike. We later got word that the Sheriff's Department was going to crack down on the sportbikes. They were looking for that bike with #155 on it. Nothing was ever said about any of the other "regulars". But the one with the numbers was easy to spot and report to law enforcement. Not that anyone would be doing anything illegal to get in trouble.

Dunno bout CMRA or other organizations, but if WMRRA gets a complaint bout a rider actin the fool on the street, they pull his racing license. That won't keep ya off trackdays, but if you're racing and in a points battle....

I wouldn't worry too much about #'s on the street. Next thing you know that Telefonica or Erion paint job will get you ticketed and you have to get rid of those Bostrom or Hayden replica leathers as well. Same for any "sponsor" decals or a Rossi helmet with a 46 on it.

A few years ago I put a lot of street miles on one of our endurance racebikes trying to sort out an intermittent fuel injection problem that kept biting us at the track. I had the minimum of street legal equipment on the bike and a temporary insurance certificate from my cool insurance guy. Technically, it was all legal. Plenty of cops saw me, no hassle because I didn't ride it like a squid. Or maybe I was just lucky and didn't run across the wrong cop on a bad day.

Funny thing about racing organizations governing off-track activity. Two years ago I personally witnessed an AMA top 10 racer loop an RC51 in front of my shop as he was leaving. Wearing shorts, a T-shirt & thongs. OUCH! That left a mark.
