New Motorcyclist is out!

The May issue of motorcyclist is out and has 2 detailed
articles on both the ZX-10R & YZF-r1. Have not had a chance
to read fully, but here are the "Cheers & Jeers" portion
of the article:

YAMAHA YZF-R1

*engine:.....[9] Godzilla meets Miss Manners
*drivetrain:.[10] Seamless, baby, seamless
*handling:...[9] Agile, stable, potentially legendary
*braking:....[9] Sharp teeth and sweet feel
*ride........[8] Taut. Maybe too taut
*ergonomics..[9] First-class legroom for tall types
*Features....[9] Useful gadgetry for austere technoids
*refinement..[9] Flirting with perfection
*value.......[10] Accessible excess and looks to cry for
*fun factor..[9] You own 184-mph superhero for $10,699

VERDICT: more of everything we've learned to
love about the R1!

KAWASASKI ZX-10R

*engine......[9] Like dynamite, but 162 horses
aren't always user friendly
*drivetrain..[9] a little lash shy of perfect
*handling....[9] Lithe, light and highly agile
*braking.....[8] Powerful, but more bite, please
*ride........[9] Compliant for such a beast
*ergonomics..[7] Survivable if you're 6-foot-3 or under
*features....[8] Shift light and lap timer are cute;
tacho sucks
*refinement..[9] The most urbane Ninja yet
*value.......[10] 162 horsepower for $11,000. Can't beat it
*fun factor..[9] Absolute power corrupts, absolutly

VERDICT: Supreme horsepower in a highly capable
package. Like any surface-to-surface
missle, tricky to wield and dangerous
in the wrong hands.

Part 1 of the of the litrebike camparo is in this issue. It is mostly
number crunching and performance stats. The real test is in the
next issue.
The May issue of Cycle World is out also, but unfortunatly they did
not recieve the ZX-10R until 2 days before deadline. so their comparo
test will also be in their next issue.

is it just me or is anyone else frustrated like shit that every shootout or review seems to contradict half the others?!? one says engine is smooth, next says engine is all over the place, dyno figures are also all over the place, reviews of ergo's are completely contradictory, etc etc etc. just pisses me off. i realize that teh day's conditions and rider preference make all teh difference in teh world but there seems to be NO consistency between reviews.

Freek, I think this is just a testament to just how good each of these new bikes is. And in trying to pick nits, the editors can only draw distinctions based on their preferrences since there is no huge objective differences.

The problem stems from those that buy in the hope of having a huge advantage and are let down thru some kind of buyers remorse as they want to feel they have the "king" of sportbikes. Simply, there is no "king" this year.

No doubt this is due to the Gixxer1000 showing complete dominance recently and has set the expectation that one should be that superior today.

This is just like in the good old days before the 900RR set the precedent that something could be just that much better.

We all win when you can buy any of these and shred just as well no matter which sticker is on the tank.

Does a tank sticker really matter that much??

no doubt u have a good, valid poitn erich, but i'd still like to see a little more consistency, or at least have people sound less factual about things like ergos, and stree a bit more than it's jsut THEIR opinion for THEIR body type and what THEY are used to.

not a chance matt. i cant even afford to put my 12 on the road (tho i prolly will within the next week or 2 anyway). i wont be seein a new biek for some time, unless it's a cheap dirtbike r something.

Unforntunatly, I do not have a scanner. Sorry.

Here's the last sentence of the comparo article (part 1).

"This is still an amazingly even brawl, but after considering objective
performance, it looks to us the Kawasaki is the best prepared to keep
swinging until the others hit the floor."

Here's a qoute from editor & chief Mitch Boehm on the R1,

"I'm liking this new R1 a lot, and so far, at least, it's the literbike
to beat in my book."

Those #'s are similiar to Sport Rider's. Must be "corrected" times and dyno numbers.

Kaw, Suz, Hon, #'s are in line. The Yamaha is quite high. But then again, the Yam I tested was brand new.

Honda's is Last - Again

Yep, the clean sheet honda design is last in every performance category by a wide margin. The 1000RR is a dud.

A "dud"? Ranked last, but hardly a dud... In the real world, these bikes are all beyond the limits of most riders. The RR is a good bike. But it sure has encountered some really tough competition this year!
I've been spending a lot of time on the RR (waiting for my 10 XL!!) and it more than holds its own.

What is interesting is that it is much easier to go faster on the RR, than the R1 on the street. Could be simply because it's more manageable. JMHO, but everybody has one. Wish everyone could ride them all.

AMEN!!!

I'm not even religeous, but it fits.

Its a shame we have to buy these bikes on faith without knowing if we are going to like them. Then not wanting to ride the one you passed on or a buddy got in the fear you'll like it better.

So which ones suspension is nicer based on the riding you did? Or rather, what were the differences. I know how you feel about the Kawi, was curious what you thought about the Honda and Yamaha.

I just bounced the RR up and down a few times but was really impressed with how the box stock damping setup was very balanced with both ends moving at the same rate. Seems the only one of this group that did that. Seemed the softest, maybe too soft. The Yamaha was smooth but seemed more damped with box stock settings with the rear having too much rebound to ride nicely on the street.

Would love to hear you impressions about your seat time on them.

Man, don't go getting disappointed in the CBR1000, it's great bike, all of them are great bikes. In street trim they fair one way, but it is when the bikes are developed that they take on a different flavour. It takes a different type of rider to explore those machines, I for one don't want anything like that for my own bike. I can't ride like that, not at that level. No matter which one you choose, you come away with a machine with more potential than a lot of people will ever touch on the street or the track. To get the very best these bikes have to offer, they cannot remain stock. So, you see, these magazines are just published oppinions. I knew the 12R had some problems when I purchsed it and still went through with the purchase and have enjoyed my bike for four years, now it have a little brother. Not really little, newer...

Peace,
JB

IF the 10R's top speed is correct at 188 MPH, that means that it has the limiter on it?

Love to see it with the Muzzy Bonny box, but that would be scary on such a light bike!
