I looked in all the magazines and MAW and the others only list a Dunlop 208 and 220, my ZX10 came with a 218? Can anyone shed any light on this??? Any sympathy that you all can shed will be greatly appreciatted... Erik

You are bent for what reason...Get the thing plugged, there is a plug that is used that is a patch and plug in one. It's done from the inside of the tyre. I wasted money like that once too, get the thing fixed and don't worry about it.
posted April 07, 2004 04:39 PM
Plugs are a TEMPORARY fix only!! they are not intended for long term usage! especially on any high HP machine that taxis the tires to xtremes. Yes i know it can be ridden for many miles and may very well never have a problem, but it only takes one time to find out otherwise.

PLUG the tire?? I am with Big Daddy... I have been riding for over 14 years, and never, never would I plug a tire unless I was in need to get to point a from b.. I am not the best rider in the world, but I do push it a little, and the thought of a plug or patch slowly letting air out or giving way while knee deep in a turn gives me the willys.. We all have our own opinion, I guess mine is my ass is worth $150 bucks, will have to skip a nice resteraunt this month...LOL./

It doesn't matter which end its on plugging a tire is TEMPORARY!! trikchop as i mentioned you can and have gone X miles without a problem....but it only takes one time to change ones mind .....kinda like goin without leathers for years and one day..........ooops.

I'm not one for the mine is bigger than yours thing, I have been at this for a minute too and have yet to see anyone spit a plug. Although it is possible and I am sure in rare cases it has happened, but the probability is very low. I tell you what, when you get your new tyre, I'll send you money for shipping of the old tyre since you're going to get rid if it anyway.

Hey johnnyboy , mine is bigger than yours?? Yo are entitled to your opinion, sorry you dont agree.....
But hey, who cares.... Just thought most people I know would never plug a high performance tire. Would you plug the side wall on your Porshce? Guess you would.. A bike tire to me is basically like the side wall of a performance tire on a car, it is under a lot of stress and strain. Therefore when a car tire is punctured in the side wall, nobody runs the risk of a repair. Just my opinion, means nothing,,,,

I've used plenty of plugs over the years and have never had a problem. This includes plenty of extreme riding. The only thing I'm ever wary of is placing a plug near the very edge of the tire. Other than that, go ahead.
If not, save your otherwise brand new tire for one of us.

I would plug it and ride it through the bike's breakin period. If you still think you need to replace it, replace it after that.

hell, i even ran my tire to the bone with a quicky plug in there! worked fine and didnt leak air, tho i can't say i'd recommend doing that. but i throw myself in with the "nothing wrong with a proper patch" group. course, i aint goin anywhere near 100% on the street. anyone actaully have stats on how often someone crashes due to a bad patch/plug?

a food friend of mine sent me this email after I told him that so many on this forum thought I was wrong for not plugging, I tend to agree with him
"Are you kidding me. I cannot fathom that any human being with half an ounce of brains would tell you to plug a bike tire, sure to get you to the nearest shop to get it replaced i could understand. You would either have to be the first one in your family to walk upright or a mental midget to want to ride at even a decent pace on that tire.I guess people's live are worth less than the $150.00 dollar tire they would replace. Look at Dunlop's problem with tire failure, last year at road atlanta and this year at daytona and you want to add to the inherant risk of just being a motorcyclist. In the 15 plus years and hundred of thousands of miles i have put on bikes , including 4 years of CCS racing i have plugged 1 tire {to get the bike to the nearest dealer}.I rode under the speed limit for about ten miles and paid retail for a tire just so would have no worries.I guess it's just my stupid opinion but are you shitting me pile!"

ok, now i'm gettin annoyed. i have heard this argument so many times and always half the people go on about how incredibly stupid plugging is, like ur buddy there. but on what grounds?!? i have NEVER seen anyone put forth a single piece of proof, not even an anecdote, to support their position. the argument is similar to that for wearing gear but theres TONS of factual support for that argument. so where is the support against plugs? anybody? please? and i just LOVE this "isnt your life worth $150" piece of rhetoric that argument only works if you can prove that $150 actually makes a significant contribution to your safety. hell, even then, spending $50G on a car vs $30G prolly gives u a car that's twice as safe if u crash (think mercedes c class vs pontiac grand am), but do u see people calling each other stupid fucks for not speding an extra $20G for keeping your entire family alive? how many here ride 10mph slower wherever we go, which would prolly decrease our chances of crashing by like 50%? SUPPORT UR ARGUMENT OR SHUT UP PEOPLE!
sorry, just a bit of a pet peeve. i detest mindless propaganda. soemone give me some solid proof of patching being a bad idea and i'll change my position 180degrees.

Based on your previous reply i seriously doubt proof would change it let alone sway your view or opinion about other people stating that its ill advised for long term riding (short term by all means) my suggestion would be to engage the brain and use a bit of common sense as opposed to having it be a pet peave don't ya know.
Lets see we have heat, tire flex, a foreign partical (rubber plug or patch) added to or inserted into a tire that will be subjected to a variety of conditions it was not originally intended for therefore the structual integrity of the tire is sacrificed in some form or fashion.

"Ok try this maybe it will shed some light on the subject, its not 100% proof but just something to read, oh yeah no where did i call anyone a fucking idiot. I pointed out that they might not have evolved all the way, or have been the brightest person but lets forget about that .If you decide that plugging a tire is a good idea by all means go right ahead. As for advice for someone i would like to see ride with me or to have a better % of risk factor NO WAY.But like i said you want to do it go ahead. The car argument is kinda week.I have access to a viper worth over $90,000 , it has 5 point harness's , the best brakes $$ can buy, over 800hp and functioning air bags, i could die just as easy in it as my $20,000 prelude. But then again cars have 4 tires not 2. If you lose 1 tire on a bike its 50% of your traction, 1 tire in a car is 25%.Plus cars function alot better on 3 wheels than a bike does on 1."

big daddy, u obviously dont know me at all, tho that's to be expected. i am prolyl about the least biased guy u'd ever meet, and i WILL change my stance on the subject if i see some kind of reasonable proof. the items u mentioned may be common sense, but common sense can be misleading (if we stuck by it, we never would have learned to fly). the particular points u mention do indeed indicate that a patched tire may be inferior to an intact tire, but 1. it doesnt mean it's at all dangerous, and 2. it's possible that the patched tire may be LESS dangerouse than an intact tire. i'm not suggesting it is, but it's often teh case that a repaired item is stronger than the original, so it wouldnt surprise me. furthermore, plugged tires arent my pet peeve, people spouting loud opinions without any form of justification is my pet meeve (one of many).
skully, the comment was not aimed exclusively nor directly at ur buddy. it was directed at the countless posts i haev seen, articles i have read, and people i have heard say similar things, regarding tires and on other topics. and tho i didnt say ur bud called anyone a "fucking idiot", he did essentially call people just that (half an ounce of brain). jsut a more polite way of saying the same thing. which is fine, it's well within his right to voice that opinion. i'm just tired of what borders on propaganda. like i said, it's the general practice that i'm talking about, not just ur buddy. his counterargument against the "life worth $150" comment is false tho. both inaccurate and it doesnt address the item, it goes off on a tangent (i'm objecting to the rhetoric, not the fact that a tire on a bike is more critical than a car's tire).
link doesnt say much unfortunately. if anything it suggests repairing a tire is safe so long as the usual practices are followed (not near the edge, etc), but again it's just 1 man's opinion. almost invariably, noone ever studies these things to scientifically quantify where the safety point lies. it's all left to "common sense", which tends to err on the safe side (not a bad thing of course). along those lines, if i had the money i too would replace a punctured tire in short order. it's relatively cheap insurance. but i'd still like to know whether it is actually necessary to do so or just wasted insurance. and yes, i know i shoudl just google for the subject and find my answer, but i dont have time right now so y'all carry on with the argument, i gotta get back to work i hate work.

skullyeb - not sure where all this is going so let me take it back to the beginning. Sorry you found a flat tire on your pride and joy.
Means either:
1) God didn't want you to ride at that moment because if you had it could have been your head flat instead of tire for whatever million reason's you can conjure ... call it the risk factor WE ALL take with our loving hobby.
2) Shit happens!
Fret not - hate that it happened - either way - get it fixed/get'er done - get it rolling
P.S. over one week back in Korea now...how long before the shakes stop or will I have them until me and little Nasty(ZX-10R) are rejoined ;(
