Hey Fish! want some $$$? How much money does it cost to add the software that allows pictures to be uploaded directly from our hard drives, etc?
(without having to use a host on the web?)
You can usually limit the size of each picture, if that is an issue?

the software is not the issue. it's the monthly cost of the bandwidtrh. we could never afford it.. with the amount of traffic this site is doing it just wouldnt happen.

Thanks, that makes sense.
We can always post them on another website and link to them. That steals THEIR bandwith-correct or incorrect?

It doesn't STEAL - If they are hosting pics, it's understood that people will be sharing them. Linking to them is sharing them, albeit with a large group of people.

Don't know if you guys heard about them...but activewebhosting.com is only $10 a month and it's unlimited everything. I have a website through them and it really is "unlimited". Just thought it might help...

guamaniac, there are alot of deals out there like that, but unfortunately they are always too good to be true. it's shit quality hosting & connectivity / not _really_ unlimited / host is running at a loss to get market share but eventually will up prices or, much more common, go under. backups are usually nonexistent and the hardware is slow, old, unreliable crap. the bandwidth is cheap stuff with high lag (only really useful if donwloading video or other big files) and the bandwidth reliability is spotty. they say unlimited but when u really start using alot they throttle you back either by limiting your bandwidth or by putting you on a real busy machine so it's jsut not capable of serving that fast. and again, they usually don't last. they're still trying that dot com era bullshit of givin stuff away (practically) free in the hopes of building an empire, but it never gets anywhere and eventually they run out of capital and go kaput. it's an OLD story, seen it too many times nevertheless, thanks for tryin to help out!

I'm with you on that one...but I would never recommend something I don't use or know about. I've used them for about 4 years now with no problems... Now, I'm sure I don't have as much traffic as these sites...but I have 3 full websites with them with one account...I also store some files on there video/pictures... I've never had any problems and have other people using them now too... my site is www.guamaniac.com--it's not that big, I think it's about 700 megs....but I've also stripped some stuff down from it...again, just trying to help out and I understand your concern, I also thought it was too good to be true--but it's been good to me for so long now I had to say something about it. Like I said just check it out--maybe not for this site--but for future reference

what sport of traffic do you pull of the sites? (ballpark in gigs?)

Hmmm....good question. I haven't really updated the site in a long time except for posting family pics. I know my traffic is nowhere near these sites...but I've uploaded some pretty big pics (biggest was 3mb and a video 1.7mb) and use it for my ebay pics as well as any pics I post on boards. I have lost my site 2 times on my computer and had to download the whole site back to my comp and it worked flawless--the only thing that happened was an email from them making sure I was the one who was downloading the site because of the sudden increase in traffic. Oh well...the guy that runs the place is cool and always is there for help...I don't know how he does it and I don't really care Like I said I've used them for 4 years, was with godaddy before them (really sucked), and the site has NEVER been down...not once. Even when I missed a couple of payments when I was on vacation....

I think you'd be surprised at the amount of traffic this site has and the amount of bandwidth it consumes... ... let's just say we're not "small" ____________ What business is it of yours where I'm from, Friendo?

Yeah, I'm sure that this site just eats up some bandwidth... Like I said they offer unlimited bandwidth and I really believe that they stick by that....would be good to test out their guarantee Oh and for every referral I get a free payment
Oh well...if you ever decide you need some hosting....just keep them in mind.

glad to hear ya found a host that worked out well for u! that's a rare find. generally if u dont go over like 5 gigs u'll be ok, cause they pay less than $0.25 per G (we pay considerably more). it's a good deal for big files like video too as the rather ligh lag on those cheap networks isnt an issue then. plus large files dont tax the server much. unforunately a board like this does cause it makes tons of database requests, and that is where the real expense comes into play. u can put hundreds if not thousands of little personal sites on a server (and that's commonly what happens), but a busy database intensive site like this... i think u'd start taxing teh server with just 10 of them. and even if the bandwidth is cheap, the server and rackspace is expensive (gotta pay for hide AC system, uninteruptable power supplies, backup generators, multiple main lines comin into the building, 24/7 onsite techies, etc etc). it's an interesting business in a way, but damn hard to make any money these days.
