10R Registry? Couple of benefits:
One - Help defeat Ebay scammers
Two - Give everyone an idea of who's out there with a 10R
Would be as simple as you want it...Just name and vin...Or could put in name, vin, addy, email, etc...
Freek - Any way to tweak the member list code?
If we could flag it by bike type, then you'd have multiple registries right at your fingertips.

that's a hell good idea. wonder if i should jsut ahve it as a few extra fields in member registration or make it a separate list so people dont have to register a bikeland account, they can jsut enter the registry by itself. thoughts?

Just add it as fields to the memberlist, folks can go back in and edit them when they get their VIN. Make sure and make it multiple fields so people can have more than one bike! Prolly max five fields, that covers at least one of each discipline (SS, ST, T, N, D)

I think we already have that in the registration, right? And since this won't happen till after the board is closed, only members will see info. That way if someone does an ebay scam that *IS* registered, would be pretty easy to nail him. And folks that aren't registered won't be seeing any info.

*laughs* I sure can sniff them out, can't I? Ah well, some kids are just potty mouths...Wonder if they think they're representing their dealership like that?

IMO, the registry needs to be separate from the normal registration page. Here are some thoughts:
1) Make the registry as simple as possible so that non-members are willing to enter their info even if they do not wish to register as members.
2) Make the registry a separate link on the main board page. Once you click on it, you'll see the full registry, and an opportunity to submit an entry also appears on top. The page could be locked to members only, but I don't think that best serves our purposes. There really doesn't need to be any confidential info posted.
3) Default sort by VIN country codes and ending digits. User defined sort ability by clicking on username, location, etc. Soon, we'll have a list that can be immediately searched for any number of reasons.

interesting points, pretty much along the line of what i expected. closing it to members only by integrating it with board registration keeps it, well, closed, which does have its benefits. but seems to me a registry is usually a more open concept, with very simple registration. so i'm tempted to make it a separate database. this would also be good for if the board software changes (which it will eventaully) as the registry wouldnt change.
i guess part of why i'm not really sure how to do this is i dont fully understand the function a registry serves? is the only practical value the ability to look up VINs to try and check scams? obviosuly it's just kinda nice to have for stats and general interest. what about the dangers of having the VIN's available to the public, or is this a moot point since people can just read it off ur bike when parked anyway? also, there's nothing stopping someone from registering someone else's VIN. so depending on what people use the registry for, i'd be more or less concerned with security.
more thoughts? anyone have any experience with registries?

Actually, one of the big benefits is locating other owners near you. Which is why I was thinking of only making it accessible to registered members. That way, you could elect to show your location/email/etc...And a nearby board member could contact you to coordinate a ride. In addition, the board admin could send out alerts based on areas. (Example: "BC Riders - There's a hidden patrol unit operating near..." etc. etc...)
I'm thinking that you can target information much more effectively that way, but by the same token, you have to give registry members the option to opt out of alerts.

You still have the problem of self registration on this forum giving people access to potentially sensitive information, so be careful what info you collect or add another level of access. You only need a valid email address which can be setup anywhere by anyone.
From reading other posts, I'm assuming the VIN is your number plate, this is an assumption though, so maybe one of you US guys can tell me. Is this vehicle identification number or what?
My point about the country field, is that you don't have one dedicated to country, it's a shared field so it's difficult to get a list of countries through a query, as you are relying on individuals to enter the country and spell it correctly.

I'm all for it. I remember registering my ZX-12 some place but it was so long ago I can't remember where (old age sucks).

I don't think security will be an issue. The frame number is useless. I can walk down the street and copy down VIN's for any vehicle in any parking lot. What good is that unless you have access to the DMV 'puter?
Also, restricting access to members is worthless from a security standpoint since anyone can register to be a member.

The micapeak site has added the ZX-10R to the registry, I just looked and I saw it there. Now they need to add the ZX-14.
