Here's a thought...
At what point is a vehicle's color determined? Is it on the MSO (Manufacturer's Statement of Origin), or is it stated when the vehicle is registered with the state DMV?
The reason I ask, is I'm just thinking of a alternative method of delivering motorcycles to the customer. What if the dealer were able to receive an inital order of 1 motorcycle and all the appropriate body pieces in each of the available colors? That way, they could sell the bike in the color the customer desired, then order another bike 'just in time' and keep their inventory low.

Well, there are a few things that could be problematic.
When the bike is put together, KMC QC's the bike. This is for warranty purposes. The factory would be put in a position to question warranty on bodywork if the pieces were damaged during installation by the dealership or shipping. As we know dealerships nick up bodywork, this could raise costs to cover additional warrenties that would occur.
There would be the additional (significant) cost of shipping a full set of bodywork. Right now throwing it on the bike in the same box doesnt cost extra.
You would still have supply problems as you are still relying on a set of bodywork being in stock at all times. It's a chicken of the egg deal, but now you have to keep supply of two things.
Expenses would actually increase for the dealer not to mention to stock and store the items. Plus possible damage and additional warranty expense would probably increase unit price.
But the biggie in my mind is this means dealers actually have to do something to the bike more complex then bolting on the mirrors and windscreens. That is a scary thought. Not to mention what they would charge to mount bodywork. Hell, they try to stick it to you for hundreds to charge the batter, put on the mirrors and windscreen now, just thing how much more they would want for actually having to do some real work.

Good points Erich - Considering the skill level at a lot of dealerships, that would be a big problem.
Ah well, it was a thought!
