Aaron Yates Fined
Just found this on Cycle News:
The following release is from Suzuki...
American Suzuki Motor Corporation (ASMC) today announced that Team Yoshimura Suzuki factory rider Aaron Yates will be sanctioned for his actions at the season-opening round of the AMA/Chevy Trucks Superbike Championship Series in Daytona Beach, Fla., on Saturday, March 6, 2004.
According to ASMC, Yates acted in an unsportsman-like manner while representing Team Yoshimura Suzuki. His personal conduct has resulted in ASMC levying a $25,000 fine against Yates.
"I understand the frustration that Aaron was feeling," said Mel Harris, vice president of ASMC's Motorcycle/ATV Operations. "This was the second consecutive year where he would have had a podium finish at the Daytona 200 if circumstances hadn't intervened. Despite that frustration, cooler heads must prevail in professional racing situations. We at Suzuki feel that the fine is appropriate for the conditions."

That's crap! If the AMA doesn't fine him because "Suzuki already did so," that will be the most bogus sweetheart deal ever. Do you really think Suzuki is going to fine him??? Hell, they might fine him $25,000, but then they'll turn around and give him $25,000 for some "appearance fee" or something like it.
I guarantee that they've worked out a deal with him so that 1) they can save face from a PR point of view, 2) the AMA is convinced that they don't need to do anything, and 3) in the end Yates comes out smelling like a rose.
The AMA had better step up or the credibility of that organization will suffer miserably!

That isn't worth a damn. AMA should take action to ensure proper penalties. AMA should have some procedure for this sort of thing. They should have a points penalty or 2 race suspension for such acts. That $25,000 will never come out of his pocket and whats $25,000 to Suzuki anyway.

What a lot of people fail to mention is that what Yates did could have easily paralyzed the man. They both crashed, and there was no way for him to know that the other man had no injuries. Not knowing that, he still kicked the guy in the back. That is worse that biting someone's ear off in my book. $5000 and a single race suspension is mice nuts....especially since it will be dropped to $2500 if he takes an anger management class.

i think monetary fines are largely pointless. they had the right idea with the suspension, but it should have been at least 3 races AND make him take the anger class (tho i wonder how effective they are?).

Ideally, he's suspended for at least three races. Yosh drops him cuz he can't ride and his wife leaves him...

Bullshit. Not enough for what he did. I knew the AMA would chicken out - they have NO balls. *NO* balls.
Should have suspended him for at least three races AND fined the shit out of him. $100k would grab my attention.
That would put an end to that crap pretty quickly.
AND fine Zook for his behavior - make the team responsible as well for the rider. They'll keep that boy on a leish then.
