...that 'blue' Z-1B...I can still remember the first time I saw one ride past me as the rider down-shifted for a corner...the way that smooth engine sound taunted me, that strange dreamy color, the way the pipes dazzled my young impressionable eyes in the sun...I remember the smell of it when I picked mine up from the dealer in Asheville, NC...my first ride on it...one week after learning how to throttle, shift, brake, and lean on the Avenger...all that power...in the rain with no rain gear and 300 miles ahead of me through some of NC's twisty roads and smooth Interstate...I didn't care...after being denied by my parents al those prior years, I was off the Islands and on my own, I was 19 years old, and IT WAS MINE, ALL MINE! ____________ “We sleep safe in our beds because rough men

Yeah man, I am having flashbacks like crazy. I have the same story, but it involved my brand new '82 GS1100E, 19 years old and wild as fire. I can't believe I am still alive to talk about this. Boy have times changed... I still love the feeling of picking up a new bike though and I will relive it as sson as I get my call from Ultimate Cycles in Richmond, VA. I won't be riding it far though, still gonna be cold here.

...nope...had long lost friends there that I used to visit when I was a young buck stationed in Fayetteville, NC (Pope AFB) back in '75-'78...beautiful area, gorgeous roads...here in sunny SoCal now with at last 300 days of good weather riding a year!...very near world famous Palomar Mountain, Ortega Hwy, and other exquisite roads ____________ “We sleep safe in our beds because rough men

Did you retire from the military? When I was active duty we had a trip there (Pope AFB) to terminate some fibre and teach a class on terminating and splicing fibre. Not a bad area, some of the locals complained of the gunfire. They often refered to the town as Fayettenam and some said they'd lie awake at nght playing a game called guess that caliber. Man, I laghed my butt off when I heard that. I'm retired in Hampton, VA, the roads here are nothing to talk about. You have to go out west or south-west to do any fun riding. I might try to get a group together one weekend this spring/summer to hit Deals Gap and pick up one of those T-shirts I've heard about. Heck, I wouldn't mind to trying to get out to Jamie James place to check out his cooking while we are out that way riding.

Johnnyboy - You ever ride out on 64 to West Virginia? Some good riding out there, but ya gotta watch out for the coal trucks, they don't care. ____________

SWFT> I haven't gone that far out on 64 on the bike, that's a bit of a hump for me to do in a single day and try to have fun once I get there. It would have to be a weekend ride. Not a lot of guys out here into the twisty stuff, mostly drag racing.
You've got a pretty sharp memory... When were you last here?

I think it was back in 87 or so...First trip out there was in 81. Some good roads out there, crawling up and down the mountains!

Yeah, you wouldn't recognize this place now, crazy, crazy. The people still can't drive though, I think that is the only thing constant.

Small world, huh? So, what are you doing with yourself now?
...see avatar and first sig-line ...12 years and counting down to retirement hopefully in 8 to 15 years and hopefully in one piece ...then I'd like to ride off into the sunset for a never ending tour on my future Harley until I can't balance it or see no' mo'...yeah, I said that...my future Harley...always wanted one...and since I'll be slowing down anyway, its the appropriate bike for an AARP card carrying citizen, yes? ____________ “We sleep safe in our beds because rough men

I did the retirement thing already, been out two years now. It sure is nice to have the extra money coming in and all you have to do is continue breathing and I am a disabled vet too. I did the Harley thing too, '79 Sportster and '81 Lowrider, both were my Dad's. He had told me he'd co-sign for my first bike, but it neve happened, then he told me when I graduated he'd co-sign, never happened. So, I joined the military and bought my GS1100E. Riding beside my Dad was one of the most memorable times I've had in 28 years of riding. I really wish he could still handle a bike, I'd love to ride with him one more time.
